Definition of critical thinking: Using present awareness to observe thoughts, emotions, and biases without judgment.

Mindfulness enhances critical thinking by creating a pause between triggers and reactions. This practice allows us to use mindfulness and journal writing to document our triggers, helping you question any assumation you may have, and recoginze cognitant distortions.

Mindfulness is not just being calm, it is about you being aware of things in the present frame of mind. It helps you step back from thinking to fast and resolving your assumptions in steps, then critical thinking can be likened to mindfulness.

Mindfulness through Critical Thinking:

creates space for reflection: Mindfulness creates a pauseand "auto-piloting" thinking. You can better look at things in a slow and calmer manner.

Increase Self- Awareness: You become in tune with your thoughts and sometimes writing them out you get a clearer picture of where and what needs to be fixed.

Improve Executive Functions: This is where you can strenthen your decision.

Openess & Curiosity: You cultivate a non-judgmental stance, making you more reciptive to new perspectives.

Reduction in errors: When you do not allow distractions it gives your full attention to the matter. It lets you think clearer and not make any more mistakes.

Practices for Mindful Critical thinking:

Mindful pausing: Before you react take slow breaths to calm yourself down so you may think clearly. You will then begin to think and notice your feelings " Am I sad" "Am I angry" " Why do I feel like I failed".

Questiong Assumptions: You begin to question these feelings "where did I make a mistake" " How can I fix the problem".

Observing your thoughts: When you are calmer and more relaxed you are able to figure out why you are feeling this way, how did it bring me to this point. Writing down the feelings gives you a better perspective in where you need to go.

Journaling: Writing down your feelings on paper, allows you to see exactly what is needing repairing.

The three "C's" of critical thinking: cultivate, curiosity, and courage. you have the courage to face the difficult truths and have compassion for yourself.

Perfect timing, I had accepted I struggle with emotional control and overthinking. A recent step on the path intrigued me to explore DBT which has lead me listening to the 'Wise Mind: a DBT podcast' and book. To nights episode was titled 'Stop', the essence of this post.
