Daily Mindfulness Check-In November 16, 2022
One of the things I really enjoy in the morning is having a mindful coffee. It feels so good to smell the aroma and to have the first sips of coffee. I'm thankful for this time in the morning.
How do you practise mindfulness when you eat or drink?

How do you practice mindfulness when you eat or drink?
I do what's called "mouth feel" with my food. It's a term I learned in my dietetics class in college. You feel the food; the texture, the consistency, is it hot or cold, or is it soft or crunchy? You take in all these sensations and let your mind experience them; then you mind lets you know what you need to know about your food. I've practiced this for many years. I've discovered that by doing this, I've learned so much more about my food than I ever would have if I'd just mechanically ate it without giving it a thought. It''s a wonderful technique to practice. ❤️

How do I practice Mindfulness when I eat or drink?
To be totally honest Ami, I have literally really avoided it because I can not seem to ever reach a state of being present in the here and now. I am ashamed to admit this but it has been a problem for me for so long. I am really not sure why I find it so difficult, but it is. I try so hard to get into the present moment but it seems some type of resistance there.
I still love to have a good cup of coffee or a hot Latae from Star Bucks.
@scarletPear1945
Scarlet, no one can measure the time it needs to be able to stay in the present moment, we can only practise and learn from our practise. The less expectations I have , the more I value myself and give myself time and not rush the calmer and more present I become. Can you relate to this in any way?
@amiablePeace77
I am not trying to make excuses for my inability, nor justify the fact that Mindfulness has been a major issue for me. Years ago you tried along with others to help me to experience the joy of Mindfulness. All my results have been unsuccessful.
I wonder if this condition that I wrote a post on has something to do wit it.
Alexithymia? People who have been diagnosed with PTSD are more likely to suffer from this condition. Why? Because if early childhood abuse or trauma occurred, you learned to numb your feelings out to keep safe.
Then as we become adults and have never been able to deal with the trauma, our emotions lay dormant. We fail to learn to feel and recognize what we felt, and do not learn to express it.
RECOGNIZING THE WAYS IT SHOWS UP IN US:
Unable to define how we feel
Sometimes we can not interpret other people's facial expressions.
Unable to do an introspective evaluation of oneself, meaning being able to examine why we are feeling a certain way or better yet a form of Mindfulness.
I never could explain why mindfulness was so hard for me. It may have also been from a lack of Empathy, or an inability to understand the concept or vice versa. For example, having no empathy for myself but having empathy for others.
@amiablePeace77 I love drinking tea, it makes me feel super relaxed~
@georgiagalaxy
Awesome, what's your favorite tea if I may ask?
@amiablePeace77 I mostly like Black Tea and a certain Dilma tea I get, I have it every morning! I like having maybe two tea spoons of sugar and milk, of course. :D ~
I am very bad at being mindful when I eat. In fact, I tend to eat so fast sometimes, that it upsets my stomach. It's something that is actually quite hard for me to control because I've gotten so used to eating quickly over the years.
Drinking liquids I am a little better at being mindful. Like after making my tea in the morning I tend to be very mellow. It also helps that the hot liquid forces me not to just gulp it down haha.
@cafedaydreams
It can be really hard to change those fast eating habits but it will help your digestive system a lot. Something I find helpful is to eat with chop sticks, I do that with most of my meals and it helps me.
Nice that your tea helps you to stay calm. I find that's one of the benefits of warm drinks in general (excludes alcohol) - comforting.
@amiablePeace77
Thank you for this check-in. I also love and anticipate when my coffee pot starts making that hot magical good smelling coffee. Its like that first cup is the best. I am just like you- coffee is Mindfulness
