Hello lovely people in the Mindfulness Community, I hope your day is going well. laugh

Every perception we have is filtered through our conceptual thinking, everything we see we label, we put in a drawer whether it is a person or a thing. It’s about like or dislike.

enlightened Do you find yourself caught up in the prison of concepts about yourself and others and how could you let go of it?

Hello, I am not quite sure I understand how to answer this question. Yes there are things I like and dislike but are you asking me how to change that view?

@scarletPear1945

Hi Scarlet! To me, this whole forum is about noticing behaviors, not about changing them. The community leaders never want you to change, but simply notice, is what I think.

For me, I do put behaviors of others into a dislike category. I notice that I get irritated when people are dismissive and don't want to listen to me, for example my dad. That awareness leads me to an understanding that I need to be more calm when I am around those types of people.

I put myself in a "prison" alot...I would feel bad about myself when I don't complete my to do lists...so I strive to be more balanced and accepting of myself. :) always helps to be aware and forgiving. Season of giving and forgiving

Thank you for that great explanation Sky.

Concepts may prime us to form particular judgments and influence our thoughts and behaviors.

Yes I find myself in that prison of concepts.

How can I let go of it? by learning to not label things as black and white but be willing to change the view I have or being more accepting of others and myself.

I can't more than agree to what you said. There are so many shades of grey in between black and white.

@amiablePeace77 Do you find yourself caught up in the prison of concepts about yourself and others and how could you let go of it?

I find when I lay down or sit doing nothing that it is usual that thoughts come into my head. I try not to grab onto them and focus on my breathing.

@soulsings

I can totally relate to what you said, the mind always wants to have something to deal with and when not occupied it often holds on to thoughts which are not helpful at all. Great that breathing helps you!

@amiablePeace77 Hi there!

Do you find yourself caught up in the prison of concepts about yourself and others and how could you let go of it?

A lot of times for sure especially when it comes to certain situations. To let go of it, it helps to self reflect and weigh the pros and cons. Having a wide perspective can definitely help too.

H lovelyWhisper smiley, I truly like the idea of looking at the pros and cons of a situation to get a clear picture.

HI Ami thank you for this great check-in.

enlightened Do you find yourself caught up in the prison of concepts about yourself and others and how could you let go of it?

At times I can find myself getting caught up in things or others. But it has so lessoned now a days. I guess for me I think of, 1, Does it affect me 2. Is at appropriate to offer support 3. Is it important or is it drama All these things have helped me to not focus on silly wasteful things around me, but to keep myself focusedheart

Never really thought of asking myself these questions but now after having read them twice I must say they do make sense, something I might ask myself in future too. Thanks for sharing! heart

Thanks Ami. I have to say I've seen people in my life and even on here just "pass by" people who are having issues BUT seem like drama to others. I've seen people "pass by" another as they do not want to be bothered. I've seen a lot and been in a lot. So now I ask myself these questions and mostly I may offer to help as long as my personal boundaries are in place.heart

They say the first impressions last and unfortunately it true. I have been more cognizant of that and understand that people are different every day. It is all what is going on in their lives. I easily get put off by people who short with people or dismissive, like they do not care. I shut down and I find myself unwilling to go to them or talk to them.

I have noticed when I have a thought in my head about someone and I am hurt by them, I look at every move they make to validate my thought instead of being open. I am aware of this and I have worked on this and now I try and excuse their behavior, and also ask them if that is how they meant to come across, not always, because we never know what is going on with the other person at any moment. I annoy people sometimes because I excuse behavior of others and try to see it differently. However, those pesky thoughts still seem to come up.

I know I have the worst “imposter syndrome” sometimes. I always tell myself I shouldn’t think a certain way, that I shouldn’t be weak and cave into the depression, I should be stronger and “I know better.” It is hard with my field of work and the position that I am that I had a mental break and not where I should be helping my staff and such. I remind myself that no one, no matter their field of work, age, gender, race, sexual orientation, is immune from depression or anxiety. I try to do self-talk like that, but it is hard, I struggle with being kind to myself, yet, I find it easy to do it for others.

Sorry that was a long thought.

@Containedchaos

To suffer from imposter syndrome with all the self-doubt and not being able to internalize your accomplishments must cause a huge amount of pressure for you, hugs. Remember, no one is perfect and that we all make mistakes occasionally and are entitled to forgive ourselves. I hope coming here will help you to learn to show yourself the kindness which you so easily show others. Remember to reward yourself for getting the big things right. Great that you are working on being more open to other perspectives once you have made up an opinion, finding the middle way is not always easy.smiley

I tend to get myself into a 'mental prision' on how people view me. I know it doesn't matter what people think of you,but if someone doesn't like me I always think if I have done something wrong or have upset them in some way. When sometimes you may have just misinterpreted their personality e.g. they maybe fussy with everyone or they maybe going through things themselves which cause people to be less warm towards you.

I don't have any strategies at the moment but I want to work on how to get out of this cycle as it can cause me to go into a low mood.

@Harmony8682

I can relate to what you said. I used to fall into the trap of faulty thinking often and felt of being the reason if someone reacted badly but as you said to a great extend it has simply to do with the person themself, their mood, what they are going through. With time I learned to ask myself "How could I see this different", "What could be another explanation for it" and sometimes even just ignore it.
