The science of motivation
Daily check in for March 24th to March 26th 2025
The science of motivation is the interplay between brain regions, our body's hormones and the ability for us to set goals. Motivation is defines as the force which causes us to act on our desires or fears. There are 2 types of motivation:
intrinsic motivation:
our self- motivation to do something that makes a feel not a reward.
extrinsic motivation:
A complete task to work or task to reach a reward. ex: competition.
Our brain reward system will control our motivation. it influences the dopamine in our bodies. Dopamine is the happy hormone controlling our reward part of our brain. it communicates the messages through our nervous system.
Theory of motivation:

What motivates you to reach a goal in life?
How do you feel once your motivatged in reaching these goals?

What motivates me to keep going is the fact that I will get some reward in the end, ie. Extrinsic motivation. I also feel motivated when I engage in a hobby such as crocheting i.e. Intrinsic motivation.
I feel good and happy after accomplishing a goal. It makes me feel accomplished.

What motivates you to reach a goal in life?

I want to achieve something so I go for it. It's internal motivation and I feel good about myself when I reach my goal. It helps with self-esteem.
That's not a theory of motivation. That's Maslow's hierarchy of needs.
What motivates you to reach a goal in life?
Very little. Motivation is one of the key areas I struggle with. I can sometimes feel motivated to help others. But I have too little dopamine and too much anxiety and depression.
How do you feel once your motivatged in reaching these goals?
It's something I rarely feel, and when I do feel it, it's fleeting and I can't remember how it feels later. So I don't remember.
I guess Maslow's hierarchy of needs explains different aspects of human motivation, but it's not a guarantee humans will have motivation for those things, or explain why some have these motivations and others don't, beyond the biologically determined ones needed to keep a person alive (and even then, sometimes people won't have the motivation to eat, drink, etc.).
