The mindfulness technique that helps me most is deep breathing and then supportive self-talk  since it calms my nervous system and helps me to let go of anxious thoughts.

When my anxiety and panic attacks were high, I started reading John Kabat-Zinn Mindfulness for Beginners.
I have yet to master most of it because I find it difficult to quiet down my mind. I fidget and move too much to fully involve myself in meditation.
I try first thing in the morning when everyone else is asleep and the house is quiet but still can't seem to relax enough.

Deep breathing helps, even just shifting attention to breath helps sometimes.

I like direct approaches like headless way as well.
