House on Fire!

Our brains have an “upstairs” and an “downstairs”. Yep! cheeky

The upstairs are eagerly trying to solve problems, engage in planning and emotion regulation. That part of the “Brain House” is creative, flexible and empathic. Our upstairs focusses on keeping us safe and making sure we are okay. It sends an alarm and makes sure we are ready to fight, run or hide if we are faced with a threat. surprise

In the downstairs of the house, our alert system is located, which also includes the frightening section and the Manager.

Our brains work best when the upstairs and the downstairs are very busy with carrying messages up and down to each other. This is what helps us make good choices, make friends and get along with other people.

Sometimes the downstairs brain spots some danger, so the frightened section comes alive and creates panics and before you know it, the manager of the downstairs instructs your body to be prepared for danger. The upstairs are told to shut down temporarily, only the downstairs rule now. Connection between both is broken now. sad

This is okay and saves us from real danger, when we need to act immediately, like for example need to run away from a danger but when there is no real danger, when danger is perceived in whatever way, by negative imagination or for example intrusive thoughts we need the help from the upstairs brain to choose the best possible action.

Mindfulness helps us to restore “Peace” in the house so that both brains can do their work efficiently. It is not just about trying to use mindfulness when in an emergency situation but to do mindfulness on a regular basis to create a kind of mediator in your brain.

Hi Peace. I have worked on, and continue up to work on, appropriate self-care and my mindfulness skills. On the app I use to help me manage my meditations/mindful times, I’m over 850 days in a row. I’ve noticed wonderful changes to my behavior and how I deal with things.

@yzzil

Wonderful yzzil, it's amazing what enough selfcare and mindfulness can do for us! Good you use the app to get reminders so you're not missing times.

enlightened How do you deal with perceived emergency cases?

DBT STOP Skill:

Stop - don't do anything or say anything. Just drop it off for that time.

Take a step back - walk away, breathe

Observe - what is actually happening

Proceed - mindfully

enlightened Would love to hear your view to this

Keeping our amygdala under control and not easily perceive a situation as a threat not an easy thing but possible.

Thanks for posting this Ami 🤗

The upstairs and dowstairs are great metaphorical images! I love them.

Mindfulness does help me a lot. For me, I think listening to the body mindfully is a good way to restore the connection between the 2 floors.sometimes the mind is numb but the body knows exactly where it's blocked, where it's tensed!

@bubbleBalsam6602

I agree bubbleBalsam, one of the reasons we sometimes feel achy in the whole body and can't figure out why. A good mindfulness break helps to understand what the body is trying to tell us.

Emergency cases...in my case would be something like a panic attack, in which case I would use breathing exercises, and drink water slowly. If it’s an emergency in terms of physical danger, I make sure to choose quickly fight or flight. I’m a quick thinker but I am indecisive. I like to think I’d be able to get out of a harmful situation but I guess I don’t know.

@TheJenInBlack

It must be frustrating being able to put all things mentally together to reach a solution and then not being able to take a decision. Do you find yourself wanting to take the perfect choice?

I’m not sure what you mean by perfect choice. Since I’ve never really been in a super dangerous fight or flight situation, I’m not sure what I’d do. I feel like I’d do the right thing

Good that you feel you're doing the right thing. I was referring it to be being indecisive.

Hi Ami-wowzers this is a great post-thank youyesThis reminds me of the story/skill based writen describing our body as a house-just like you done here.

For me I used to go off 911 so fast. Done it here plenty of times with authority and things I did not understand, or changes. I've learned to STOP. Really STOP. Observe my surroundings and the actual details or what someone has shared with me. Whatever response I was going to give-change it. lol. Then slowly share my response and make note of my tone. Listen to others was a big one.

Basically slow down is what I say to myself. Do not over reactheart

True but practise helps, let's practise together. I believe many of us could benefit from just stopping and listen including myself of course.
