Hurry Illness

Hi everyone
, today I like to invite you to a discussion about
Hurry Sickness
By definition, hurry sickness is “a behavior pattern characterized by continual rushing and anxiousness; an overwhelming and continual sense of urgency.” It’s also defined as “A malaise in which a person feels chronically short of time, and so tends to perform every task faster and to get flustered when encountering any kind of delay.”
When we have to make fast decisions, autopilot brain kicks in, and we rely on our learned behaviors, our reflexes, our cognitive biases, to help us perceive and respond quickly. Sometimes that saves our lives, right? Fight or flight. But sometimes, it leads us astray in the long run.
Do you ever wonder why we're surrounded with things that help us do everything faster and faster and faster? All of these valuable time savers are meant to give us more spare time to use for ease and relaxation, simply other things than work but are we really doing it?
Do you suffer from hurry sickness without being aware of it?
Why do you think we hurry all the time?
How could mindfulness help?
Please come back here and share with us your thoughts about the speed the world is "turning" right now, about the impact on our lives, simply what you think about it.

Do you suffer from hurry sickness without being aware of it? When I am under stress it is quite natural to hurry from one thing to another.
Why do you think we hurry all the time? It can be a way to compensate with stress and or pain.
How could mindfulness help? Mindfulness can give us permission to slow down and observe and be rather than always trying to do do do.

@soulsings
Hi Souls good to see you here for our discussion. I do fully agree with you the "hurry sickness" happens more when we rush things together and not mindful of what we are doing. I've not heard it that way-but does make more sense tho. Yes! Mindfulness helps us notice this more by observing us doing this. And then learn to slow down some. Thank you Souls for sharing with us.
@amiablePeace77
Do you suffer from hurry sickness without being aware of it?
Just the normal tendancy to hurry up and get everything done quickly that comes with a long to-do-list.
Why do you think we hurry all the time?
As described in the post, the world is quicker today than it was a year ago, I think we hurry up all the time trying to keep up with it.
How could mindfulness help?
I think one huge impacts of today's world is the rising levels of the STRESS worldwide. I think mindfulness is great way for coping with stress, maybe even avoiding it and living healthy life.
@BlueSkyR - So true about trying to keep up. One nice thing mindfulness that it feels has reminded me of is how good it feels to slow down and unplug sometimes. Tbh, it feels a lot more natural than the constant frenetic pace brought on by all these "easier" tools ;-)
@lauren387
I echo your thoughts! Sometimes, we just.. get caught in , it does feel good to unplug
@BlueSkyR
Nice to see you Sky. I can totally understand that "to-do list" It can become very stressful on top of whatever else you have to do that day. I believe what you just shared is pretty honest of the "why" in most people. Some how does it feel uncomfie if you are lagging and people behind you are not? Yes mindfulness can help a lot with reducing the stress level you have. Thank you so much for sharing with us
@amiablePeace77
sometimes I intentionally hury because the task/thing I'm doing is not enjoyable and I'd rather be doing something else, spending my time in other ways, or I am trying to avoid things that are uncomfortable. Then when it's over, I slow down again and enjoy what I'm doing.
Not sure this is a problem, to me hurrying through something is an indicator that I don't like it, I don't enjoy it, and I probably shouldn't be doing it. It's nice to see how fast I do something, and if I get in the "zone" or not. If I am in the zone, I don't even notice the pace of my work. If I'm dreading doing it, I definitely notice, and want to spend as little time on it as possible, and probably intetionally hurry my way through. But I make a mental note, and hopefully change so I don't do that many more times! I prefer going slow or in the zone!
@onwardforevenmore
Good to see you Onward. That is totally understandable when you have to do something that is time consuming or uncomfie. You have very understandable reasons of the "why" you speed through something or take your time. It is good to hear you are making a mental not of it and trying to change this. Thank you for sharing with us
Do you suffer from "Hurry Sickness"? I think to a degree everyone suffers from "hurry sickness. Some may not realize they do, but I do. I recognize my thoughts that "if I just get these things done I'll be able to have all the rest of the day to do whatever I want to." Does that ever happen? No. The list of things just seems to continue to grow.
Why do you think people hurry all the time? Because of the stress sometimes put on us by society and sometimes self imposed, we constantly feel the need to "keep up or be left behind"
How can mindfulness help? Mindfulness can help us to see that the things we truly need are already here and it is important, no, imperative that we stop,acknowledge and experience them fully.
Its funny that you would pose this question. I recently told a friend I didnt feel like I was accomplishing what I should be due to the confining nature of the pandemic and he replied " Why do people feel they need to accomplish so much? Cant people just "be"? Interesting perspective to consider. I also just read an article that said the earth is speeding up and we have lost a second. Many people would say a second is so minute, so nonconsequential, what difference does it make? To them I would say in a second amazing things can happen, a life can begin, a life can end, eyes can meet, peace can be found, laughter can be heard, rain can fall, lightning can strike and even rainbows can appear, we just need to slow down to see it.
@Aero86
Thanks for sharing these deep thoughts with us! I fully agree to the never ending list, we have to bring it to a stop ourselves. I like the idea of "just be", not trying to fulfil each demand our societies give us for the only reason to feel accepted, not always wanting to strive for more but be happy with what we have. Life is precious, each second counts and you gave very good examples for it. Just a single second can change everything.
@Aero86 - One of your comments reminds of a Rascall Flatts song, Mayberry ;-)
Sometimes it feels like this world is spinning faster
Than it did in the old days
So naturally, we have more natural disasters
From the strain of a fast pace
Sunday was a day of rest
Now, it’s one more day for progress
And we can’t slow down ‘cause more is best
It’s all an endless process
