I can not sit still doing a mindfulness practice

(question I was asked)

I was wondering on this-is there something wrong with me. I do mindfulness daily but I can't get myself to sit still longer then a few minutes. Please anyone have some tips so I can enjoy longer mindfulness practices?

Me too!!! 5 mins stand still was the best so far...:D :D

Focus on the breath and when mind wandering around, switch back to the breath. Practice make perfect. It reminds me to Eat Pray Love book when Liz got stres out because she never succeed in meditation. Anyone read the book?

I find it helps practicing mindfulness when walking and taking in the sites around such as the warmth of the sun, clouds or sky. This helps to relax me. Yoga, music or meditation my help when being still.

I am with you sail, I don't see mindfulness as a sitting sport, I move I walk I talk, mindfulness is more of an adjective for me, I am mindful most of the time and when I am not then I scold myslef and stop and pause and bring myself back to mindfully being.

Meditating is more of a sitting sport. But even with that a few moments of calm and peace are worth waiting for :)

I'm not having trouble sitting still necessarily, but I sit a lot during school and homework. So sometimes I like to do my mindfulness on my bike instead. We have a very long biking path near my house, where I can cycle without being bothered by traffic. I just take my bike, start pedalling, and I do my mindfulness.

Instead of using deep breathing as an anchor to focus, I focus on the steady movement of my legs, specifically my right. Just constantly pushing down... down... down... down...

The idea comes from a friend of mine, who deals with ADHD. I'm not sure if it can work for everyone, but for me it is just as helpful as meditation is most of the time. Though I do have to admit, you have a higher probability to get distracted, so that's something that is a little more challenging.

HI Jay good to see you. Wonderful idea in concentrating on maybe another part of the body in movement. Also my daughter does that with her bike. She is ADHS/Autism. She said that i her focus. Hey whatever works right. thank you for answeringsmiley

happens to me too sometimes when mind is racing. usually i focus on my breath (so not guided), when it does not work i do body scan, even if i have to do it twice in my meditation time. if nothing works i take guided meditation. yoga is a good alternative for me too, have to try again tai chi as well.

Doing progressive muscle relaxation may help if you have a lot of energy (I've done this before, but actually been too enthusiastic and I think I strained a muscle so just be mindful :) ). Or maybe doing a gentle movement like Ti Chi or Qui Jong, with simple, repetative, flowing movements just to keep the body occupied and relaxed. Maybe you could even meditate in a weird position, like laying on the bed with your head hanging off, or laying on your back with your feet pointing up a wall. Or a simple rhythmic movement like swinging your legs while sitting or squeezing a stress ball could be enough movement to stave off the need to move. Or even practice while washing the dishes, sweeping, or any other chore. Lot's of possibilities!

Good Morning

I struggle with being calm within my self, I don't like the total quietness it makes me uneasy, I try my mindfulness exercises and try to focus on my breathing. The problem with that is I have a condition that is some form of an Apenia, that causes me to forget to breathe. It's sometimes to the point that I don't realize that I am not breathing. So in my mindful practices, it is somewhat of a distraction trying to remember to breathe.

I know that this sounds crazy but it is a true fact that plays into a lot of things. But I keep tryinglaugh

@scarletPear1945

Hia Pear thank you for sharing this. Sometimes I am just like you. The quietness within me just isn't settling for me. So mindfulness is a good thing for me. Apenia yes can be hard in doing mindfulness, but it can be done. Im not sure of "how" to help you to remember, but I do like your attitude on you keep on trying. We are here alsosmiley

@scarletPear1945. The Calm.com app has very nice, short, daily mindful meditations that have sounds through the entire thing. You might want to look at it.
