Mindfully Accepting You Body

I can't help but feel a strange apathy about my body sometimes, even though I know that loving and accepting myself unconditionally is integral to my own personal happiness and spiritual growth. And yet, after so many years of being conditioned by images of femininity in our society, I've often struggled to accept the appearance of my body. I know that I'm not alone here. For many different reasons we have issues accepting our bodies. And that is oksmiley

Some reading this may deal with LGBTQ issues, or with trauma, or with people always putting how we look down.....that is sadsad But that isn't who you are!!! You are unique in your own ways. Let's see some ways we can try and slowly practice on accepting how our bodies areheart

1. Notice: When negative thoughts pops into your head like, "I'm so fat." "Im ugly" "No one will love this damaged body" Give yourself a gentle nudge and say in a calm and kind way, "There is that negative thought again." The temptation may be to judge the thought. "How could I think something so terrible?" Allow the thought to be what it is without judgment. Say, "It is what it is."

2. Where? Ask yourself, "Where did that thought come from?" Typically, the thought doesn't arrive out of the blue. There is often something else that is bothering you that gets translated into a negative thought about your body. For example, although it seems like quite a stretch, a stressful day at work can evolve into worry about your thighs.

3. Let It Go Actively let the thought go. Imagine that negative thought sitting on a cloud and letting that cloud float by you. Your job is to let it go by without trying to reach out, grab the thought, analyze it, wrestle with it or the like. See it. Let it pass. Remember that if someone throws you a ball, you don't have to catch it. Similiarly, if you have a thought, you don't have to take it and accept it as fact.

4. Acceptance Intentionally place your attention to more affirming thoughts. Notice that they may not be "positive" thoughts like "I like my body." Sometimes this is too great of a stretch for some one. Work on self-acceptance statements like "I accept my body as it is." "My body is healthy." "I appreciate what it does for me." Focus on neutrality, nonjudgment and ultimately compassion toward yourself and struggles with your body.

I myself know this all is very hard personally. But you can do this. One step at a time, practicing dailyheart

I feel like thiis falls into a typical trap - the negative thoughts are about the appearance and the positive ones about health and function.

What about bodies that don't function well? That aren't healthy? That cause suffering?

Hi Affy thank you for checking in todaysmiley You do have a very good point there-honest! How I see it is no matter what our bodies look like, or a health issue that may deform our bodies, or a body that went through lots of trauma or even a body that is handicapped....We can learn to accept it. It;s not easy I tell you its not! I have issues with my body due to trauma from the past, I cant change it either. So I slowly accept how it is as I know how I look to people ISN'T who I am inside.

So idk if this makes sense, but you can slowly become mindful of your body and accept small things until you come to be one with it.heart

Thanks for understanding!

I'm fairly good at accepting the healthy parts of me. Even some of the illnesses are something that I accept for the most part and feel neutral towards. There are parts though where I feel like they should be unacceptable. I'm stuck living with them though.

Hi Affy accepting everything about our body is very hard. But those bad parts are part of you hun. Idk how to describe it to you. I want to come off as I'm really understAnding you. I'd like a perfect body from hair tip to toe nail. But we'll I don't. I have control over weight issues and hair cuts, but other things I don't. I cover up due to what not only I think but what others say to me. But lately I hang with positive people and they are encouragement to me.

So Idk how you feel about your body. But 1 thing may I suggest that helped me along the way. I notice, look and touch the body area you don't like. Say I am thankful for this...... you can cry and be emotional. Do this daily. Hugs to you💜

It's not as simple as that. It's parts of my immune system, imbalances within my blood and a gene within my DNA. It causes harm to the parts that are functioning appropriately, disfiguring them at times. It attacks me. Why would I love something that might kill me?
