Mindfulness Daily Check-In August 7, 2017

In our modern lives we have way too much to worry about. Its easy to find our minds filled with deadlines, busy schedules, bills, and the safety of our families and ourselves. Worrying yes this is MOnday-what didn't get completed at work or home that I need to get done NOW. We worry on things that was last week and not focusing on this day-Monday a whole new day we havn't lived out yet. These worries can distract us from the task at hand and prevent us from being authentic and present with other people. Being present in what our tasks are for this day. Is this day called Mon-Tues-Wed-Thurs-Fri-Sat-Sun DAY??? If so that is alot in one day and alot for our little brains. So how can we possibly be in just today? I choose DRIFT due to many people (including myself) have a hard time just focusing on today in a work place.
D Distant: taking us away from the here and now
R Restless: shifting about, drifting aimlessly
IF Inner Focus: in our heads, focussed on ourselves
T Trap: lying in wait for us to fall into
DRIFT, acknowledge the DRIFT, and put our focus of attention on the here and now on what were doing, on who were with, on our surroundings, on what we can see or hear, on physical sensations, on our breath whatever would be most helpful. DRIFT is when we start worrying about things, following our thoughts that take us off down roads, lanes and tracks that are not helpful to us. Worry about tomorrow, doubts about yesterday, concerns about today.
Focusing our attention on ourselves, in our heads, on worries and issues that affect the way we feel and behave. DRIFT is just following our thoughts, wherever they take us, drifting about with the clouds. Imagine an untrained puppy on a long lead - that puppy would soon find itself wrapped around obstacles and tied up in a mess. Our mind can be like that when we DRIFT.
If youre in a meeting at work, and you notice the DRIFT, well, maybe its understandable that your mind will drift from time to time, and thats okay. But you can notice it, and then choose where to put your focus of attention. You might choose to put your focus on the meeting, on the speaker, on whats being said. Your attention might then drift and you notice that youre having thoughts about what others in the meeting might be thinking about you, or expecting you to say. Thats DRIFT.
