Mindfulness Daily Check-In February 11, 2018
Hey, everyone
I recently watched an awesome TED Talk, featuring Dr. Susan David, a Harvard Medical School psychologist. She specifically studies and talks about something called emotional agility, which can be defined as the psychology of how we can use emotion to bring forward our best selves in all aspects of how we love, live, parent and lead.
You can find her TED Talk on emotional agility by clicking here: The Gift and Power of Emotional Courage. Theres a transcript available under the video if youd rather read than watch.
I want to highlight some main points in her video that I think can help with our mindfulness practices:
1. Emotions are not good or bad; all emotions are hardwired into our brains to help us make decisions that are aligned with our values.
2. We dont need to embrace false positivity in our lives, meaning that we dont need to suppress unpleasant emotions like guilt, anger, or sadness. We don't need to feel bad about experiencing these emotions. They are normal.
3. Emotions are data, not directives, meaning that we dont need to immediately react to or act on our emotions, like anger. Emotions simply occur as a reaction to something in our physical environment, and they produce physical symptoms in our body, like chills, heat, or a racing heart. We can observe these physical symptoms rather than getting caught up in the narratives or situations that spurred the emotions.
What do you think of these main points and the video? What did you learn, and what can you implement in your own life and mindfulness practice?

Thanks for this post ! Well what i learnt is that iam going to try and stay emotionally strong and also try not to react but respond instead. @EmunahHere
@Keion I like the distinction between react and respond! That is a useful way to think about how best to handle our emotions.
@Keion that is a great resolution
Just went square dancing and joined the local square dance club and had a blast.
I really think this idea that emotions are not good or bad is incredibly useful. I tend to associate sadness or anger with bad. I feel bad. I am bad. And then I clam up and don't direct the emotions or resolve them. If I can recognize that feeling sad or mad is just a state of being and it's not bad, then I think I can more easily use the emotions appropriately or resolve them.
I really like @keion point. Respond and not react. This post really is really interesting and I going to use it to tackle anxiety and negative and even positive emotions.
A week ago I was a TED talk by a crisis counselor who used to work at my school many years ago. She did a talk about understanding your emotions and emotional tolerance. And when it reaches out of a certain level then that signifies you should get help. She also made it very funny and tailored to students.
I attended it live so the video is not yet up. I will.post it to this thread when I can.
@ScotchTape
What is a TED talk?
@DanaMH https://www.ted.com/ here is the site where they appear.
@soulsingsm Mine was a TEDx event at my university, so it will appear later.
@EmunahHere
Wow Emunah this is a great check in.
I wanted to let you know that I read it this morning-but I want to listen to the video more. Right now Im in the middle of bleaching and dying hair.
Great job with the "high lights" get it
I watched the entire Ted Talk, because I really like having the entire experience, as helpful as a summary may be
I liked it, and I definitely learned something new. Especially the view of emotions as data and not directives hit home for me. Whenever I stumble upon a strong emotion, either during meditation or my every day life, I feel like I do need to react to it, just to get that strong feeling out of my system. I used to think that feeling like that obviously had a purpose and therefore I needed to act on it. I never saw it as data, something that came from something else. Like, emotions are an effect, I used to believe they were a cause for action. This make sense? I don't know. Not sure yet what I'm going to do now that I figured this out for myself, but I will keep it in mind next time I got the feeling that I overreacted.
Thanks for this check-up, it was very educational
This video was awesome!! It resonated with me!! Ive had a difficult couple of months and this gave me some perspective. Thanks.
@yzzil sorry you have had rough couple months. Glad this helps.
AGAIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! SH group not happening??? Chair not responding. Group not listed for 20 minutes.. Nothing posted that it is canceled. THEY ARE NOT MINDFUL OF MY TIME. THE SH GROUP IS NOT MINDFUL OF OTHERS. THE ADMIN TEAM NEEDS TO WORK ON THIS BECAUSE SH IS A BIG DEAL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I need a good listener that wants to help ME every day. No one cares and all I do is cry because my medical team does not care that I am in pain of level 10 24/7 and that they have no idea what is causing my pain and that I stop breathing 8 times with no pulse sometimes in the ER/hospital and the 4 ER's say GO SEE YOU PCP/MD'S/DOCTORS AND TELL THEM.................
Please contact your PCP's office to let them know that you were seen in the Emergency Department (7 times), and to schedule appropriate follow up care.
In the Emergency Department we focus on looking for conditions that are emergently life-threatening. This means that we may not have discovered the exact cause of your symptoms, and you will likely require further evaluation for your complaint.
Please return to the Emergency Department if your symptoms do not improve, or if you develop any new or worsening symptoms.
@EmunahHere I love this quote you used: "We dont need to embrace false positivity in our lives, meaning that we dont need to suppress unpleasant emotions like guilt, anger, or sadness. We don't need to feel bad about experiencing these emotions. They are normal."
It is so validating of the fact that things do not always turn out perfect. And we do not need to react! YES!
Our emotions are like a lake we are swimming in. They are not us. Thanks for these validating assertions.
