Hello, Mindfulness Family heart Have you heard of Mindful Immersion? Mindful immersion is a way to practice mindfulness and can allow us to have new experiences while doing familiar tasks! We often focus on getting to the next thing in our lives, which causes us to miss some of the beauty in what we might consider the mundane or routine activities of life, like doing chores, maintaining hygiene, eating, checking the mail, or playing with a pet.

Mindful Immersion asks us to completely immerse ourselves in a chosen activity. How do we immerse ourselves? We can focus on our five senses:

1. What do we see(colors, light, patterns, textures)? 2. What do we touch/feel(temperature, softness, texture)? 3. What do we hear(loud, soft, distant)? 4. What do we taste(sour, sweet, bitter)? 5. What do we smell?

For example, if we are doing the dishes, we can observe/notice the temperature of the water; the texture and colors of the soap bubbles; the sounds of swishing water; the flexing of our arm muscles as we scrub a plate or glass; and the scent of the soap.

Rather than focusing on finishing the task, we are developing new experiences as we become more mindful of what all a task involves by engaging our senses. Mindful immersion can cultivate awareness in these activities, allowing us to slow down and not be so consumed by what we have planned.

@EmunahHereheart

Hia Emunah thanks for this check insmiley I read this like 4 times-no lie. I have not heard of this but practice this like 90% of my time. I too just like to get things done, and then later I feel I didn't do it right or remember if I done it. Mindful Immersion now I have a name for it, is something we do alot anyways. We all just don't know this.

I really like this post-thanks

@EmunahHere Hi Emunah! heart How are you doing? I hope you are having a lovely weekend so far! laugh I love Mindful Immersion! It is so peaceful and relaxing to do, and I love doing it especially when I am doing laundry! smiley

1. What do we see(colors, light, patterns, textures)?
I see my colorful clothes representing each different color of the rainbow, and feel the multiple textures and see the beautiful patterns. Fleece, sherpa, flannel, polka dots, stripes, glitter, and more!

2. What do we touch/feel(temperature, softness, texture)?
I feel the softness of my clothes, especially when they are freshly taken out of the dryer. Then, they are both warm and extremely soft.

3. What do we hear(loud, soft, distant)?
I hear that washer doing the spin cycle and my clothes tumbling in the dryer. It is just so comforting to hear.

4. What do we taste(sour, sweet, bitter)?
I do not really taste anything at all.

5. What do we smell?
I smell the fabric softener of my freshly cleaned clothes! I love the smell of clean laundry!

@EmunahHere thanks for sharing this idea with us. I appreciate it.

I have heard of language immersion so I see how that could really be a benefit. I was mowing the grass. I saw a snake I did not recognize and so I was very mindful of where I was stepping and where the mower meant. I felt totally immersed in the experience. Works on the computer too.

@EmunahHere

Hi Emunah, good to see you! Here is what i like to share about immersing in cooking.

Today i cut lots of different vegetables, i mixed different colours to make it look appealing (i call it the happy look of food) laugh cut them in nice shapes and stir-fried them carefully, smelling the sesame oil along with the ginger and garlic. I took my time, being aware of each single step i made - to me it was almost like creating art. It gave me a great deal of satisfaction.

@EmunahHere - Thank you for this reminder. I have been practicing mindful immersion for several months and it is still difficult! My awareness of when I am being mindful vs not has improved, but overall this practice still requires lot of conscious effort on my part. My goal is to be able to live mindfully in all activities, a lofty goal I know, but I pursue it one activity at a time. Presently I am typing on my phone in response to this thread. I see my phone, my fingers, my phone keyboard, and the reply window which I am typing in. I hear the gentle soft sound of my skin against the phone screen, the air conditioning, and birds outside. I smell the incense I lit when I came home. I can feel my phone screen, my clothes, the cushion I'm sitting in.
