Hello Lovely Community!! How are we doing?

Today is Social Saturday of the Mental Health Awareness Month!!

Stigma is all around us. Where there are people, there is stigma. It is time to bring awareness to the stigma associated with mental illness. Generally, there are two types of stigma. Firstly, social stigma which covers prejudicial attitudes and discriminating attitudes among people. Secondly, self-stigma, which covers the internalizing by the mentally ill person of their perceptions of discrimination. To understand stigmas, here are some statistics provided by NIMH (National Institute of Mental Health):

enlightened On an average 43.8 million adults Americans in any given year suffer from some type of mental disorder.

enlightened Out of 43.8, 9.8 million experience a chronic mental disorder.

enlightened Severe mental illness also occurs in the lifetime of approximately 13 percent of children ages 8 to 15. While , in youth ages 13 to 18 the rate of illness is 21.4 percent

Many people do not seek treatment for their mental illnesses because they are scared of the stigmas associated with illnesses. They fear of losing work, housing, family, loved ones and afraid of getting judged. The impact of these stigmas are that person experiences low self-esteem and withdrawal from society. As well, worsening the symptoms and a block to get treatment for the mental illness before it turns into chronic ones.

I believe one of the ways to fight against these stigmas and spread awareness about it is to learn about the mental health and illnesses. Mental illnesses is like fever. Like you seek physician help to get treated from flu or other disease, similarly, one need to reach out to specialists to get treatment for specific mental illnesses. The people with mental illnesses need to be get treated with same compassion as others get treated with other medical illnesses.

So, what could we do??

yes Be compassionate for oneself or anyone who have some mental illnesses. Understand that you or they are not alone.

yes Educate yourself and others about the mental illnesses.

yes Empower oneself rather than feeling embarassed and ashamed. Anyone can suffer from mental illnesses.

What do you think about Mental Health and Stigma? Let's join me in discussing about it today. Hope to hear from you.

Happy Weekend!

@ASilentObserver stigma can be so hard to fight off sometimes - it can make people feel worthless and 'crazy' for their disorder, when in reality it's none of those things, just societys way of making people feel bad about things :( thanks for the post <3

I don't think I was very mindful last night when I agreed with my husband to allow or son to go camping, fishing and crabbing at the coast with his girlfriend.

@ASilentObserver

A very interesting post thanks

I was unaware how much stigma affects everyone until

quite recently. I suppose it has always been there but until we raise awareness we can't combat it!

@ASilentObserver Hi Obs! :) How are you? I hope you are enjoying your weekend so far! <3 I think you wrote an amazing post! I suffer from some mental health problems for most of my life, and I have never gotten the proper treatment and help until recently. It is a struggling journey, and I faced a lot of stigma both from myself and others. It is not easy to go through that, but spreading awareness, compassion, and understanding helps us diminish this stigma until it is hopefully gone once and for all!

Wow Silent so do like this check in you shared with us todaysmileyStigma and mental health is really high. Sometimes personal stigmas are higher then societysadI like that you shared on ways we can possibly shut down the stigma's in ourselves. That to me is a bigger one then what others think about me for having mental illness. For me I take encouragement on mindfulness exercises here the discussions, I find things to read on what I have.

Mostly I tell myself I am loved-I am worth it-I am meheartheart
