Mindfulness Daily Check In May 1, 2018

Hello everyone
Today is Teachable Tuesday Mental Health Awareness
wootwoot!!!
So how can we be mindful of teaching others about Mental Health?How can we share, educate, teach others on what we are going through? How can we share with them the best way to help us? Well let's get creative together
As we know how it feels not to be heard, or no one really knowing what bipolar makes us feel like, or being depressed and other things. So we want to teach others about mental health now-today!!
1. Talk about it! Share things about whatever mental Illnesses or struggles you might have. Share the triggers or symptoms you face. Yes this is very hard for some of you- but when you practice this several times with kind folks people WILL listen
And if they don't listen how you think they should-don't judge them. Feel empathy.
2. Share your story. Have you personally struggled or currently struggle with mental illness? Dont hesitate to tell friends and family about it. Your story can encourage others to ask for help.
3. Encourage non-judgemental speak. Try to educate those around you on how to talk about mental illness. Never use words like crazy or insane as insults.
4. Talk to loved ones about how they are feeling. Regularly check in with those close to you, especially if you know they are dealing with a mental illness. Same goes for you, share in whatever ways you need to let others know how you are doing.
5. Talk about mental health with your children. Dont assume kids are too young to understand. Depression can affect children in elementary school.
6. Volunteer with local mental health awareness organizations. The National Alliance on Mental Illness is a great place to start.
7. Encourage your friends to screen themselves. When discussing mental health, be sure to mention HelpYourselfHelpOthers.org--its a great resource for those concerned about how they are feeling.
8. Don't forget who you are in all this. You are you-so special and unique. Not your mental health issues.
These are just 5% on how to be mindful and share awareness of Mental Health.Being mindful also means you checking in with self. You being aware of how things are with you before you have others learn about you. Also you being teachable to. This means being open minded as well and accept feedback. Teachable hearts
Please add or share things on how we can be more aware on Mental Health and share with others

I wish someone would teach my Pysc Dr about Mental Health Awareness so he could help me. I have been telling him what I need and he refuses. I really don't understand that man!!!
@DanaMH
HI Dana maybe your doc is refusing for a reason to make sure you are getting the right care. idk hun on this.
@RumpleSteeleSkin
I just find it so odd that my eye dr today said that she is sending a note to my PCP since my migraine is causing my eye pressure to go up.
@DanaMH
It is good to hear you are getting some answers for your health issues
@RumpleSteeleSkin
What is really weird is my pysc MD said I don't need a pysc MD and then 10 min later said lets make an appt in 2 weeks. So confusing.
@RumpleSteeleSkin
Oh this is a big post... with lots in it. Lots to take in.
Starting the conversation.... with anyone will help cure the stigma. NAMI's approach this May is #curestigma.
Mental Health is a topic we should have with everyone including children - I agree.
This day in age, more and more children are struggling with depression. A report out of the UK by the Children's Commissioner that social media is overwhelming children emotionally (https://www.childrenscommissioner.gov.uk/wp-content/uploads/2018/01/Childrens-Commissioner-for-England-Life-in-Likes.pdf). It's a surprising looking into children's lives and their devotion to the screen which is compromising how they see themselves and others.
Time to Change UK has a great tool to inspire you to take action to help end the stigma (https://www.time-to-change.org.uk/get-involved) They have tools and print outs that you can use in schools, offices, community, with media outlets to help stir the conversation. If that's not your thing -- think about just taking the pledge.
The National Alliance of Mental Illness (NAMI) in the US also has a pledge, tools, and information to help start the conversation too. (https://www.nami.org/stigma)
You never know the power of your words -- be it in 150 or less characters or a full article on a blog -- you might be the one point of connection that can change someone. Often, we don't know how our actions towards another person impacts them. 7Cups is prime example of that -- we support each other in chats, forums, Q&A, Listener/Member exchanges. We don't know who or how many who read our words - You are not alone. -- I understand. -- I sympathize. -- are really touched by them. We don't know how we may have altered their lives by being open in talking about issues impacting them and us that the rest of the world makes them feel shame for even thinking. You may not realize it -- but I think we are changing lives (ours and someone else) every single day we are here and talking about mental health and the issues we face. One day... with luck, work, legislation, advocacy and conversation ... what happens here - acceptance, support, sympathy, empathy, uplifting, and so forth will pour out into this world where it is so much needed.
When talking about Mental Health - we have to pause and talk about mental illness. The pain of "going it alone" because of shame and guilt has to end -- and you may not be able to end it in the world in one day but you can end it at your house by making it a safe place to talk about it openly, without judgement, and invite family and friends to join you. To be able to talk about the healthy side - we have to address the flip side - mental illness. We have to do it with honesty - courage - strength... and it will make a different.
I've bounced and tumbled as I do ... there's something in this Tumbleweed Mode... take what will you and leave what you want.
It's all Peace, Love and Chicken Wings with me.
@diplomaticconfucious
WOW Diplomatic all this sharing is wonderful- thank you very much
Keep sharing with us
@RumpleSteeleSkin
Glad it made sense.
I remember someone saying they wanted to see some "Site the Source"... which is a throwback to an old game I used to play with other history students at university - so sources I will try to have.
Some people need help starting a conversation... I think having tools and information helps in that.
We have to address both mental health and mental illness -- because they are two sides of the same coin. We can't objectively define one without the other -- and even then I think it is still subjective, to be honest.
I saw something... 1 in 4 people have mental illness... So if you invite 3 of your friends to join you for dinner... one of you at the table is/has/or will struggle with mental illness. Really ... stop and think about that. A family of 4 -- one of you has, is, or will struggle with mental illness. When you look at it that way -- this is something that needs to become a point of discussion, destigmatized, and solutions provided. Mental illness isn't abnormal -- it is the norm.
::: climbs off soap box, sets it in corner :::
@RumpleSteeleSkin NAMI is a great organization. They have support groups for Caregivers and Family members of people with mental illness challenges and also peer support for those suffering. There are many local chapters. Great place to receive and also give support.
@soulsings
HI Souls yes thank you for sharing. There are so many good places to help support on this. Thank you again for sharing this
@RumpleSteeleSkin in fact if people care to join 7cups has a NAMI subcom https://www.7cups.com/home/nami/
@RumpleSteeleSkin Hi Rumple! :) How are you? Happy May! I hope you are having a lovely Tuesday! <3 These are so great, and I have actually spent the past few days discussing my problems with one of my sisters and two of my best friends. It felt great to do so and it made them more aware as well as more open to share their own stories as well!
@SaimaK
Oh wow Saima great job in sharing mental health with some folks
I bet it could of been scary but then when you done it and new it went well it was a good feeling for you. Great job
@RumpleSteeleSkin Thank you, Rumple! :) It definitely was scary at first, but I felt quite easy and light afterwards! It was a great feeling. :) Thank you again! <3
