Then when your done. write a comment on what your thoughts are. Enjoyheart

Potatoe,Coffee And Eggs

Once upon a time a daughter complained to her father that her life was miserable and dreary. She grumbled that she was tired of fighting and struggling all the time and not getting anywhere. It seemed that life was just one problem after another.

Her father, a chef, took her to the kitchen. He filled three pots with water and placed each on a high fire. Once the three pots began to boil, he placed potatoes in one pot, eggs in the second pot, and ground coffee beans in the third pot. He then let them sit and boil, without saying a word to his daughter.

The daughter, moaned and impatiently waited, wondering what he was doing.

After twenty minutes he turned off the burners. He took the potatoes out of the pot and placed them in a bowl. He pulled the eggs out and placed them a bowl. He then poured the coffee out and placed it in a mug.

Turning to her he asked. Daughter, what do you see?

Potatoes, eggs, and coffee, she hastily replied.

Look closer, he said, and touch the potatoes. She did and noted that they were soft.

He then asked her to take an egg and break it. After pulling off the shell, she observed the hard-boiled egg.

Finally, he asked her to sip the coffee. Its rich aroma and warmth brought a smile to her face.

Father, what does this mean? she asked.

He then explained that the potatoes, the eggs and coffee beans had each faced the same adversity — the boiling water. However, each one reacted differently.

The potato went in strong, hard, and unrelenting, but in boiling water, it became soft and weak.

The egg was fragile, with the thin outer shell protecting its liquid interior until it was put in the boiling water, then the inside of the egg became hard.

However, the ground coffee beans were unique. After they were exposed to the boiling water, they changed the water and created something new.

Which are you, he asked his daughter. When adversity knocks on your door, how do you respond? Are you a potato, an egg, or a coffee bean?

In life, things happen around us, things happen to us, but the thing that truly matters is what happens within us.

We have the power to choose new ways of responding to life in any moment.

So, which one are you? And which one will you choose today?

@RumpleSteeleSkin

Thanks for this interesting story Rumple. I always liked to create something new but there were times I joined the potatoes, the eggs. Today, I choose "coffee beans" because I learned I HAVE A CHOICE

@RumpleSteeleSkin nice story. Thank you.

I think we are all 3 at different points in our lives. And maybe even all 3 in one day. How we react to challenging conditions affects how life turns out for us. The next time I face a challenge I will ask myself the question.

@soulsings

Souls good to see you here nowsmiley Yes I agree with you- we have been all 3 in different parts of our lives, and for some maybe 2-3 at one time. And that is ok too. When I searched for this story as I learned a bit from, I went through something personal, and actually observed myself being all 3. Also I felt I was very open minded to do some internal soul searching mindfully. But I really like the coffee thocheeky

Unfortunately, today I was a potato. I had so much pent up frustrations and hardness but I felt weak after today's stresses. I am striving to be a coffee bean- making myself do things new and amazing without the stresses of boiling water/stress affect me negatively. It takes time. I am in college preparing for exams so Im feeling like a potato most days. Also applying to graduate school makes me stressed and I break down due to other stuff. Trying to be better than a potato. I will get there. It's hard though. But I cant give up.

Hey there Novanox good to see you heresmiley It is hard in life to be struggling and frustration is there. Hugs to you NovanoxheartI do hear that you are really trying to do your best as well as do things in life to improve yourself. It is ok to feel like a "potatoe,boiled egg and even coffee". I do agree with you on it taking some time to change things or improve. Graduate school sounds very stressful hun. I do hope though that you can be mindful of just where your at. No judging or anything. Observing and showing yourself love. I do wish you the best.

Hugs to youheart

@RumpleSteeleSkin

I've been working hard lately to try to be the coffee bean. Journaling, observing, sitting quietly, trying to rewire my thought processes. I've seen some changes, like calming down quicker and recognizing when a thought is unhelpful. I'm finding the holidays to be especially rough this year and am feeling more like the potato or the egg the last few days, depending on my mood at the time. I keep thinking it's the layers of the onion unraveling toward healing, like as I'm gaining healthier methods I'm also beginning to judge myself more for not doing these things back then, or wondering how things would be different if I knew more. Trying to be gentler with myself and know I did the best I could with the info/skills I had at the time. It wasn't my fault back then, and I can't control other people. I guess still it leads me to yet another level of grieving with this new information. But hopefully this will lead to more healing and I'll make more coffee again.

Now I'm getting hungry.

@SentientiaPoecile

HI Peocile wonderful to see you heresmileyIt does sound like you been working hard hun. Those are great mindfulness skills journaling,observing, sitting quietly! Really they are. I believe as I have said several times in this thread, it is ok to be all 3 at once or all 3 during the week. I believe no one can be coffee each day and are true to themselves. I do love the layers of an onion thinking. And actually it takes alot of personal work to take a layer off. I love what you said here "Trying to be gentler with myself and know I did the best I could with the info/skills I had at the time"

Please continue to show you love, care, patience, gentleness. That is being mindful of you. I do understand a lot of the personal judgeing, the back and forth thinking of myself. I was told self judging is ok to a point, but when it gets impulsive and we do it all the time then it's an issue. Give yourself some time to grieve fully, and that does not have a time limit hun. Yes I do believe and you keep allowing yourself to heal, you will see yourself coffee moreheart

I'll share my breakfast burrito with you. Hugs to youheart
