Mindfulness Daily Check-In October 22, 2017
Hey, everyone
I hope that your weekends are going well. I'd like to introduce a concept that you may have heard of during some mindfulness sessions; it's called "Beginners Mind."
We can think of Mindfulness as an umbrella that covers many components. One of these components is what Jon Kabat-Zinn calls Beginners Mind. So, what does it mean to have a Beginners Mind while practicing mindfulness?
Every moment that we experience is always new, yet we tend to drag so many attitudes, opinions, and ideas from our past experiences into the present moment. Because of this, we tend to feel like we are experts regarding situations, people, and things. Having a beginners mind means that we do our bests to stop trying to be experts. When we stop trying to be experts, we create space for new experiences in the present moment. We enter the new moment with a fresh mind, meaning we arent stuck in ideas or opinions of what we like or dont like, and we dont predict the outcomes of situations.
Questions:
1.) What does having a Beginners Mind look like to you?
2.) How can you cultivate a Beginners Mind?

Ooh this is an interesting concept I hadn't heard of before
1.) What does having a Beginners Mind look like to you?
For me, having a "Beginner's Mind" means that I soak up new information first, then try connecting it to my previous knowledge.
2.) How can you cultivate a Beginners Mind?
Since I'm school I've taken a lot of biology/anatomy & physiology classes, this is especially hard for me when taking other classes where these areas interlap with others, such as psychology. Being open to new information before forming an opinion on it is how I plan to cultivate a "Beginner's Mind"
As always, thanks for the wonderful check-in!
@BlueberryFriend
Thank you for checking-in today
Cultivating a "Beginner's Mind" can definitely help classes feel more interesting, and it helps us with learning new information. We are more likely not to shut out ideas because of any past experiences or opinions. I am glad that you made that connection because I think it's an important one to mention.
@BlueberryFriend
HI there Friend I so do like your meaning here-thank you
@EmunahHere
Hiya Emunah wonderful check- in today
You all always get my brain a flowing when I want it to relax.
1.) What does having a Beginners Mind look like to you?
I think a beginners mind means like well a new look/thinking/believing/starting over. Like opening a new sketch book. It is ready to learn.
2.) How can you cultivate a Beginners Mind?
I'd teach my brain new skills 1 by one slowly. Practice them. If I don't do well with it, I pause and try it again te next day.
@RumpleSteeleSkin
Hey, Rumple
Thank you for checking-in with us today!
I think your comparison of opening a new sketch book is helpful because it shows that, even though we may have participated in an activity several times, there's always room to experience something new during that activity.
I agree with what you wrote on how to learn a new skill. I think taking it step by step, one day at a time, and being patient are good goals while practicing any new skill. And, if we start to get frustrated with ourselves, it's definitely okay to pause and try again later.
@EmunahHere
Ive never heard of that before and I wasn't sure what it was but I know now so that's something..

@RumpleSteeleSkin
SMILES.
Thank you <3
I just started a job very similar to a previous job at a different facility. I wanted to go in knowledgeable, but also be very open to learning new things and how they do things. I'm willing to be critisized and ask questions both to make myself better and as a way to contribute.
