Hello everyone in the Mindfulness Community, I wish you all a wonderful weekend heartlaugh

Studies have established that a sense of purpose is related, over time, to living longer, developing fewer age-related disabilities, lower rates of cardiovascular disease, and healthier lifestyles.

Fulfillment truly comes from the belief that what you do really matters, and its a belief that you can gain no matter how late you start.

Loving-kindness meditation, especially when you think about others, can help you to find purpose. Extending that kindness to people in real life can also improve purpose; people told to perform random acts of kindness a few times a week for a month experienced increases in eudaimonia – a type of well-being that includes purpose. This has been mentioned on this site already a number of times, it is not something new for most of you, however, I find it helps me to get reminders from time to time.

So, today I just like to share this video with you and would love to hear your thoughts about it.

Loving Kindness Meditation to Develop Mindfulness and Compassion

@amiablePeace77--- Wonderful check in today!! I am a firm believer that our self worth, purpose comes within us mostly. Some comes from our family, friends etc. But how we are connected to ourselves and show love to us is importantheart

@amiablePeace77 thanks for this meditation link. I like wishing happiness and peace for others because it makes me less self conscious.

@amiablePeace77 Love this! So I love my meditation! I personally use an app called, Calm, everyday! I really like this video. The man who was speaking had a very soft, calming voice and it was easy to follow along with him. It made me laugh becasuse I started falling asleep while listening to him talk about loving kindness but my favoirte part was repeating the words, "May I be happy, May I be well, May I be comfortable and at peace." Thank you! That was fun!

@amiablePeace77 This is a nice thread but I still struggle with my life's "purpose" and I also struggle with sending loving kindness to people I dislike. I listened to most of the video, and while I appreciate loving kindness meditation, I don't know how it can help me find my purpose?

@fearlessWriter78 good question for which I do not have a simple answer, but let me try.

I hear you it is hard to think nice thoughts about people who have hurt us. Starting with an easier strategy, I try to not react to the person or the thoughts of the person. The reason I do this is I do not want to feel the suffering that angry thoughts stir up in me. I am not reacting because of the other person, I am doing it to make myself feel better. Looking at it this way is a step in this direction.

When I am getting better at not reacting, I try to stop thinking that this person is against me. They are stuck in a mindset of hurting others. There is nothing I can do to change that so I try to refocus my attention on my breathing or what I sense around me. It is like changing the channel.

These are not instant fixes. As I try these strategies I usually slip and fall down, so I get up again and start over. This may be something with success at first or it may be something that takes months or years. There are little victories like not bursting out in anger when they say something to me that is irritating.

@soulsings Thank you for your response, I really appreciate it!

I like what you said in the first part - I can likely think of the person who hurt me without reacting. That's something I think I can definitely work on.

But in the second part I'm not sure I understand what you mean. You said you "try to stop thinking that this person is against me" but then say that the person wants to hurt others. What if the person really is against me?

It sounds like something I'd like to aim for though, not reacting to the person or stirring up angry thoughts. However, I think there's about 2 people that I have such rage for that I'm not sure if this is even possible. I guess it feels to me like if I stop being angry at them, then I'm going against myself and my true feelings, and thus rejecting my own feelings, which tell me that these are bad people, and I don't want to defy myself or my beliefs, if that makes any sense? I'm currently working with a therapist on this so it's ongoing healing, and I know meditation isn't an instant fix for these things for me... I don't even know if I'll be able to "get over" these people and the damage they've caused, but it's nice to think that maybe I could.

@fearlessWriter78 the second part also explains what I meant "They are stuck in a mindset of hurting others. There is nothing I can do to change that so I try to refocus my attention on my breathing or what I sense around me. It is like changing the channel. "

This is not personal even if they say it is. They are enslaved by their suffering and making others suffer. We can escape the suffering by changing what we can change and accepting that we will get through the rest somehow.

It is one step at a time. Maybe the second part will not be clear till later. Basically I try to "stop playing the blame game." Every action has an equal and opposite reaction. I accept that and know that most of my suffering was something I brought on by past actions or attitudes or beliefs. Or just stop trying to blame the other person. Why? because it is like opening an old wound that never heals.

What they did may not be right, but closing that chapter in my life can start the healing process.

@soulsings Thank you so much for your response, I understand a lot better now! This makes a lot of sense. I'm definitely going to consider doing what you described to help myself. heart

@amiablePeace77

It is so true that helping others makes us happy deep inside yet we feel so alone and abandoned....it's all righr, we manage somehow on our own but yes the essential message was yes, helping others allways made me happy and I was cursed by my mother for doing it since I was little....I was not supposed to share my "expensive" toys with my my poor friends. So I left my mother with her "expensive" toys and we children used our imagination to build our oun toys with our hands....much more fun...and freedom..
