Hi Mindfulness Community,

How is everyone? Today, I thought I would post a meditation called Leaves on a Stream. It's rooted within acceptance and commitment therapy. This is a beautiful meditation to allow thoughts to pass you by without becoming lost in a spiral. I hope it is useful :) Please let me know how you get on!

Imagine you are sitting or standing in the middle of a stream.

The water is flowing away in front of you.

Notice if there is any sound from the running water...

Notice if there are any trees, etc. on the banks of the stream.

Now see leaves floating down the stream away from you.

They can be any shape, colour, or size. Whatever comes to mind for you.

As the unhelpful thoughts come into your mind, be aware of what the thought is,

and then place it on a leaf.

Now watch it float away down the stream.

Do this with each thought as you notice it and for as long as you like until you feel a little better.

As you acknowledge each of your thoughts, you do not need to hold onto them.

There is no need to become attached to the thought.

Just acknowledge it and then place it on a leaf.

By watching it float away, it loses its hold on you and it's intensity.

Be gentle with yourself this exercise will take time and practise :) It's not a quick-fix and often we can become absorbed with our unhelpful and/or negative thoughts so this is a useful way in trying to diffuse what is happening in our minds.

@LisaDeRegtMBPsS morning Lisa thank you again for a wonderful check inheart

I done something like this last night as I lead a song in my client's memorial service at his home last night. The emotions flooded all over the place. Good bad ugly worrisome boogers they were. I found myself in a panic attack as I let these feelings flood through. It was time. It was time to let go of my client and accept truly he is up there with our Lord. So I had to collect myself as I was going to sing a song dedicated to my client from us caregivers that were with him for so long. Mindfulness. Wow My senses were all over the room, observing, noticing, sharing the hurt, love and emapthy everyone was feeling. Walking towards a few to hug them as I sung the meaningful song and the family finally felt the care and decication we offered their loved one.

Ok so here is the song I song

@LisaDeRegtMBPsS nice Lisa. I have heard a variation on this of sitting on the bank and watching leaves float by imagining they are our thoughts. Not clinging to thoughts seems to be one of the points of either meditation.

Thank you for this meditation. I will keep trying to work on this. However, I have extreme trouble trying to imagine anything. I just can not do that for some reason. It would probably help me a great deal if I could get to this point.

Do you have any suggestions on that issue?

@LisaDeRegtMBPsS

Thank you for this exercise Lisa. I like the idea of putting my thoughts on a leaf and let them go.

Being gentle with yourself, something I am learning smiley
