For me, motivation comes with lots of support. A lot of my anxiety comes from a feeling of minimization, I feel that members of my family and friends don't support my dreams or growth. When I feel unsupported, I don't want to do anything. Enthusiastically supporting others' choices is great motivation. heart

Support of others can definitely be of great help, I do hope though that you can also learn to support your own self when others are not being supportive enough (although I hope the later won

I really struggle with motivating myself. I'm on a special kind of antidepressant for motivation, specifically. Trauma keeps my past clung to me and fearful of the future. I'm afraid if my abuser found me, she'd engulf my life again and basically do some illegal stuff to get me to submit to her again. It keeps me locked in place, unable to make progress in life. Depression takes away my motivation and I battle anxiety, fearing I'm doing something that will compromise my safety and make me "stand out too much" and therefore become subject to further abuse. Even basic hygiene evokes this fearful response. No amount of reminding myself she's not here stops the overwhelming feelings. I'm good at reasoning. If there were a way to reason with that emotionally trapped part of myself, I would have been over my trauma by now.

That's why I joined this subcommunity - to learn how to motivate myself. Normally, I have to resort to willing myself, despite how I feel. I then get willful and resentful of myself for always having to do things I don't feel are safe to do, despite recognizing cognitively that I have no good reason to presently fear the activities (not living with her anymore, how could she find out I had a shower?) and that I have good reasons to get them done. I can acknowledge and know all day long that cooking healthy meals is healthy for me and that it's really good to do healthy things and that it's meaningful to my life to remain healthy throughout the rest of it, but I can't bring myself to cook or do dishes in the kitchen. It's not being in the kitchen. It's daring to do something that asserts I can live well outside of my abusive mother's control.

Sometimes, I can feel the medication helping me a little and if I play music that gets me pumped up, I can almost feel that instrinic felt inner momentum to do something and I can do something that doesn't give me intense anxiety, so long as the activity isn't trauma-related. So I choose where I can focus that inner momentum, and once I get going, I can accomplish a fair bit. Then I'm usually exhausted or in bodily pain afterwards and it takes a while before I can work myself up to it again.

@blossombreathe personally, i think that motivation is having the will to do something, usually pushed by something good else (ie a reward)

To motivate myself, I imagine myself when I achieve my goal. I imagine my parents and friends proud of me for making it heart

Heres a secret that once you know it, can change your life. Action often comes before motivation.

You simply start doing an activity and then your motivation kicks in. Nike was right withJust do it. For example, I dont always look forward to my workout, but once I start, I find my flow.

If you tell yourself you HAVE to do this or you MUST do that or you SHOULD do this, you can weaken your motivation.

The power of choice and simply reframing your language to CHOOSE to can be incredibly empowering and exactly the motivating language you need to hear. Choose your words carefully and make them work for you.

Sometimes you need to change your focus. To change your focus, change the question.

If you ask yourself whats wrong with this situation, of course youll find things to complain about. Ask yourself whats right about the situation and you can quickly find the positives and get your groove on.

Sometimes your body or emotions are working against you because youre not giving them a break or fueling them the right way.

One simple way to improve results here is to find a routine for eating, sleeping, and moving or working out that supports you.
