Can we connect without language?
I have a magnetic attraction to music from my culture.
I usually dont share music with those from other cultures because not everyone is interested and of course they cant connect in the same way usually (naturally).
However since Ive found my comfort zone with some of my friends here on cups I felt like I could share a piece.
I wont overwhelm you. Just this one piece. Heheh....
The song was originally in the Punjabi language, composed in Pakistan in 1985. Due to its popularity it has been recreated many times over the years. This version below is a 2021 release from India and has additional languages (Urdu and Hindi) used in it.
As you may know, Pakistan and Bangladesh were formerly India, so we in South Asia have the same culture/ ethnicity although there is a lot of variety under this umbrella category.
Marriage is a central theme here. Its celebrated with several days of events.
Both the Muslim and Hindus dominantly living here are unified by such themes of marriage, family and its celebration.
We share a similar kind of mindset and emotions with respect to partnership and children.
A woman is considered fortunate if she is married. (A mindset which is changing as women are becoming financially independent).. still the emotions are strong with women's marriage.
I have benefited from a lot of Western ideas due to a big portion of my life being spent outside of this region. But - I am also extremely attached to sentiments and ideas from South Asia as well. And its an identity Im extremely proud to carry. (Keep in mind - I usually see my first identity as 'human' only and try to keep religion and culture out of it.... yet the sub identities exist of course).
Ive often wondered how two people would feel if they couldn't understand each others languages. Like I'm talking in Urdu and Im answered in French... what would be the emotions, chemistry like... it would be beautiful to explore (I think there was a movie on this theme as well.... )
I have watched a lot of French movies with subtitles of course but I can feel a connection with the emotion/ mindset regardless of the language barrier.... you pick up on the common and the different with a little time ...

There is a line that goes "Kashni dupatte waliye, Munda sadke tere te"
That line always makes me blush.
"Kashni" is a color- in the spectrum of purple shades. And that happens to be my favourite color. I dream of wearing lilac shade on my wedding day.
"Munda sadke tere te" means "The guy is crazy about you"
So the whole sentence goes --- "oh the girl in purple attire, this guy is crazy about you."
and its just so touching, cute, sweet "Aww" feeling type... when you see a couple madly in love... the kind of happy feeling you get?

I love the energy of the music and the vibrancy. It's just magical how universally no matter the culture, music brings us together. We don't have to understand the words, the best just speaks to us and cultures become less to the forefront. It's interesting where you say, women in your culture, are considered lucky if they are married , that's something important for me that I've seen evolve throughout this platform. Female listeners are constantly asked, their age, their relationship status, if they have kids, they are immediately considered less if they answer no, as if they are less or lacking I think it's very important for people to realise they don't know why people are not married or why they have no children or even if they are capable of having them. There needs to be more reject and not trying a woman's value to anything other than her own worth. Thank you for sharing a glimpse into your culture through this beautiful song 💜🥰

And yes - a woman getting married is joyous but its an equally joyous moment for the guy too. It shouldn't just be about women. And - one can totally have a fulfilling life without marriage and children- men or women - its about choice, circumstances and individual beliefs and values.

I agree. I think it's very triggering day for a woman who cannot conceive or suffered sexual trauma or had a miscarriage, and then she's being questioned on why she has no kids!
Oh that reminds me. I was talking to a gynecologist friend recently. Who does ivf and all. And she was telling me in the current times most fertility issues are coming from men's side. And people dont know about it. When a couple cant have kids they always look at the woman.
And - I even know of tales when the men didn't have fertile sperm and expected their wife to stick with them. And cases when men chose to abandon their wives when they couldn't give them a child due to her fertility issues.
Regardless... when a man isnt married or without kids, society could care less. (At least in my part of the world). But if same applies to a woman, she has to face judgment and pity and shaming even.

It is called "Filhall2", and it is probably my favourite song from your part of the world (and one of a few I can recognize; even if I don't know the movie or TV series). And one of my favourite artist from Pakistan is... Nadia Ali?
As for the song you linked, it is a bit too calm and soothing for my taste. I prefer more uptempo tracks, even if they're romantic. In terms of music I am a kind of an ADHD person, so slow-paced music make me drowsy or easily distracted.
Yesterday I was with my son in some street restaurant run by people from India, and they played their own choice of music. Quite often that is a very refreshing experience, freeing me from the routine and the terrible predictability of Western style music.
Actually, I am listening to various genres of music, and I think your assumption about sounds connecting various cultures is more than true. I listen to songs sung in English, Polish, Russian, Korean, German, Italian, Swedish, French or other languages. I think that music indeed can build a bridge between cultures and nations.
I didnt know of Nadia Ali.. thanks for telling me about her. I read about her and heard her singing. She is beautiful although I didnt understand her beliefs all too well... (not judging).

You said you were looking for an insider's view on European music. I think one of the worst things that happened to us was... American cultural invasion. Of course, it was great and fun in the 1980s, with all those blockbuster movies 👍 But now—in my very personal view—it's getting worse with every deca(y)de.
First, Europe is not a single country—as some people in the U.S. may tend to think. We are diverse and complicated, and many regions may have their own music style.

French language always pulls me in... it sounds gentle and honest.... more balanced out than English...which sometimes gives a militarians vibe and love is in its intricacy, so I have to kind of dig in.... but French and Hindi/ Urdu just make me relax without any mind work.... Arabic (from the Quran) is another realm altogether entirely different from these other language vibes, likely because of the god connection.

The lead singer is Junaid Jamshed whose voice I absolutely love.... and he had a very interesting life journey with spirituality ... I met him too just for a few minutes though when he was on a visit to Canada where I lived for a while.... this song is like a favorite for patriotic sentiments. Its like a pop equivalent of a national anthem - thats the kind of passion it brings.
Im not into Hollywood fan fever either while liking some of its elements. So I understand your aversion to the cultural invasion. Ive always got a different feeling from Europe and US. And Id clearly choose the former... they look more authentic to me.

Daya - having Punjabi roots is interesting. I always am happy to see mixed breeds .... new genetic combinations and relocation to different regions would lead to new ethnic group perhaps? How cool !!!
The Afghan part of my region... seems to have come from the Inter marriages between different ethnic groups ... Afghans/ Pathans here have light eyes (hazel) and light brown/ blonde hair and are considered more attractive due to these European features (brown people have a fascination for white due to a long colonial past perhaps).
Me... my parents are both Punjabi. My father's family came from indian punjab and mothers from Pakistani punjab. (Punjab province got divided into in the partition to form the new countries). Although my paternal grandmother is from Kashmiri origin. Both my paternal grandparents had light eyes (grey blue) and a whiter skin tone .
My eyes are after my mother - dark brown
But my fathers eyes are grey . I wonder if my kids could have grey eyes due to some genetic thing i might be carrying? Id like Hazel eyes for at least one of my kids though.. gosh I need to hunt for a Hazel eyed man lol.
One of my paternal uncles married a Portuguese lady ... i have cousins who are half Punjabi half Portuguese... two of them were highly attractive ... its very interesting for me to see all this genetic and personality fusions that result from intermingling
But then your place of stay adds another layer to who you become.. my mother grew up in Kenya Africa and speaks Swahili even now. I lived in Canada for 10 years and it has influenced my outlook a lot.

almost 90% of the people Ive met predict that my ethnic group is Eastern European (I know why ...its a long story for another time).
I had a few friends from Romania. And I saw so many similarities. They were humbler in their approach yet drawn to finer things in life. Much like how I am.
I may not know a lot about history but I base a lot of my opinions on the people ive met from different regions.

I enjoyed "Dil Dil Pakistan". Surprisingly, both the arrangements, the band and the video clip may sound and look very close to Polish disco pop music of the 1970s to 1990s.
As for "Aline", I think it's very European, very French, with a lot of airy feeling. I think this is the kind of music I could listen hugging my partner, surrounded by dimmed light, dark and cold behind the window, some ginger tea, biscuits and sweet red wine on the table 💜
