Musical Roots 🌱
I love jazz, and I’ve played all kinds of instruments over the years (chronologically: violin, piano, recorder 🙃 [totally counts], trombone, now vocals, and I’ve experimented with more). I’ve been exposed to a lot of classical, it’s the only genre I can actually make new songs for in my head, full harmony and everything.
I feel like not enough people respect old music!! Just about everything modern has its roots. Rock? Traces back to blues/jazz. It’s crazy how connected this stuff is. I do like that a lot of popular modern songs have jazz/classical bits in them (LAUFEY WE LOVE U).

One of my favourite bands Sleep Token has influences in Jazz, a lot of their songs have Jazz type chord structures, harmonic progressions, piano textures, syncopation and off-beat phrasing which all has it's roots in Jazz too. They also hit with a surprise saxophone solo, they also have heavy rock, metal, pop and r&b influences too. Check out Caramel, Damocles and Euclid and the Saxxx at the end of Emergence for examples! 🎷🎷🎷

@greka7 ooo, ok! Gotta love the classics, I’ve been listening to a lot of Billie Holliday and Etta James, Eartha Kitt, Julie London
more modern but not necessarily recent is Norah Jones, some of Amy Winehouse’s stuff (Back to Black album is kinda jazzy)
recent includes stuff like Laufey and Scott Bradlee’s Postmodern Jukebox (they do jazz covers of modern pop/generally popular songs, everything from Lovefool to Seven Nation Army to Gangsta’s Paradise)
