How to handle intrusive thoughts in OCD ?
I have been struggling with OCD for quiet some time now. Although I have been taking meds for the same but still on most days it gets difficult tackling intrusive thoughts. Every day I have to deal with incessant worrying over little little things, unwanted and unpleasant thoughts repeating over and over. Ideally I should be just ignoring such thoughts but its easier said then done. These thoughts just sap the energy out of me. I would appreciate some advise on it. Thanks.
Yes, intrusive thoughts can be really, really troublesome. As I'm sure you know, OCD is a serious medical condition, and for advice about these very difficult thoughts it would be best to discuss them with a medical professional. Here at 7 Cups most of us are not professionals and our advice might not always be very reliable.
So here's some advice from the guy who invented Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT), Dr Aaron Beck. (He's now 96 years old, by the way, and still teaching.) In a short video (4 minutes), he explains that:
In general, taking a negative stance towards thoughts really makes them worse.
You can watch it at the Beck Institute: Suppressing Thoughts and Obsessions
I hope you'll be able to find a professional who understands that just ignoring these thoughts doesn't work, and who can help you to develop more effective ways to move forward. If you'd like to chat with me about any of this, feel free to message me.
