Dumped by someone with BPD

I met this girl four months ago at a bar through a mutual friend and we immediately hit it off. I walked her home that night (we live in the same city she just lives a couple miles away) and got her number. The next day I texted her and asked her out to dinner. The date went well, we seemed to connect and have some common interests and she came back to my place to watch a movie with me. Towards the end of the movie things got physical and we slept together. She stayed the night but I had to leave early the next morning for work. I was gone three weeks and we texted and FaceTimed just about every day. I got home from work but she was now gone on a business trip and would be for the next 6 weeks. I flew out to visit her and we had a great time sightseeing and doing various activities together (including lots of sex, it was clear from the start that we had great physical chemistry and both of us shared the love language of touch).

I flew home after that weekend and we spent the next 6 weeks apart, again texting/snap chatting/FaceTiming just about every day. We had great conversation and talking just seemed so natural and easy. As soon as she was home we started getting into the Christmas spirit together. We are both Americans living in Germany and got to go to several Christmas markets, celebrated her birthday in Prague, then topped off a New Years trip to Budapest. My little brother flew out to visit me and commented on how much chemistry he noticed between us and how good of a fit we seemed to be. On New Year’s Eve I drank a little too much and apparently told her I loved her (after 2.5-3 months of being together). She told me about it and I asked how she responded and kind of deflected the question not trying to scare her off. I had brought up a couple weeks ago how she would introduce me to friends and she just deflected that. I didn’t read much into it especially because she just started telling people we met in Budapest I was her boyfriend.

The next day after getting back from Budapest I had another month long work trip to see if I would get hired for a new position that would move me back to the states. We talked every day despite the time difference and it seemed like we had a solid system in place for dealing with being apart from each other. However, during my last week, right before my big interviews, she casually mentioned having a call with her therapist later. I had no idea she was in therapy and when I asked her what she was seeing a therapist for she said “I wasn’t ready for that yet.” I got a text from her when I was done with work to call her again and when I did she told me she saw a therapist because she was diagnosed with “borderline personality disorder.” She explained it a little to me and said I had an out if I wanted it but I assured her I did not want an out and that I was committed. She seemed satisfied with my answer; however, the next day she hit me with some big news. She told me she had another therapy session and her therapist helped her realize she still had significant feelings for the ex she had before we started talking. She said she thought we should stop seeing each other because it wasn’t fair to me. I remained calm and told her I’d like to talk when I was back in Germany. She agreed but said she wasn’t sure if she should still get me from the airport. I convinced her it would be fine and we could talk when we got home.

The pickup from the airport was less awkward than I expected. She genuinely seemed excited to see me, we hugged, we kissed, and the 2 hour car ride back wasn’t uncomfortable. We got brunch and then as things started to get physical she said she wanted to talk first (and I agreed I was just abstinent for a month and the sight of her was waking up all those suppressed feelings). We talked about her ex and I shared my view of getting back with exes to be a regressive thing that never seems to work. That there is always a reason we break up with someone and it’s best to move forward and find the right person. She told me they dated for 4 months and then started a long distance relationship because she moved out to Germany. He came and visited her last July and then she ended things because he was acting more introverted than normal and didn’t want to do any traveling. She said they got back together and then broke up again (didn’t specify the length of the breakup or how long they were together again) and then a couple months later she met me. I’m not sure how much more we talked but it seemed like I convinced her it was a mistake to go back to her ex and that we had a really good thing she should stick with. We had great sex, watched a movie, had more sex, went out to eat with my friends, came back to my place, watched another movie, had more sex, and then I went to get ready for bed. I assumed to find her passed out still cuddled up naked in my bed, but when I came out of the bathroom she was fully clothed and said she needed to leave. She said she still kept thinking about her ex and felt like if she didn’t try again with him she’d regret it. I sat on my floor and tried to reason with her that it wasn’t a good idea. Told her I don’t know anything about her ex but I know plenty about myself and about us and that I knew she’d be making a huge mistake by walking out my door. She walked out. I broke down and wept on my floor and every day now she is still constantly on my mind.

I have removed all the photos of her and put them into an app I won’t open to avoid the pain of seeing things as I scroll through my photos. I haven’t snapped, texted, or even seen her since. I haven’t removed her on all social media yet because I’m still not really sure how I feel. There is anger, anger that she could be so disrespectful to me and disregarding of how good that I’ve treated her. There is sadness, I have never connected with someone so well and so fast and then lost it. There is confusion, I can draw no rational conclusions for why she would want to leave me. I gave her everything I had to offer and I have no clue how that couldn’t be enough or how this other guy could give her more. It was also just such a sudden shift. There were no signs before she talked to her therapist and all of the sudden she feels she has to end what we have. I feel bad but the only rationalizing I can do is to assume it’s because of her mental health issues. That makes me sad for her and it makes me wonder if I should even consider taking her back should she come running. My stance on not getting back with exes is that there was always a problem with the relationship and a reason it came to an end. However, I saw no problems with our relationship and no reason for it to end in the first place.

Maybe I’m still too close to the point of injury to see the big picture, yet I have done lots of reflection and consider myself a pretty self aware person who is able to admit to my faults. Not being able to find things I did wrong or even signs of things she didn’t like about me is what is making this so tough. She had nothing to give me, no feedback, no reason why we didn’t work. Only that she still loved her ex and didn’t love me in the same way. As she walked out my door and said “I don’t regret anything with you” and then left. I texted her telling her to let me know when she reached out to her ex so I could get some closure. She texted me the next day saying he was willing to try again. I just responded “good luck and hopefully I was wrong” and haven’t talked to or seen her since. I don’t know what advice you might have for me but I could use something. I always want to take things out of my relationships to make the next one better but I genuinely don’t know what I can improve on or do differently.

@selfdisciplinedJar1125 It sounds like you are going through a heartbreaking time right now and its very hard to deal with but you deserve to have someone who is only thinking about you just like you only think about them. People who are in relationships can and do break up and get back together learn lessons and go on to have a healthy relationship it sounds like your assuming that if a breakup happens it must be a sign that there is a profound problem in the relationship and it should never be attempted again. However people break up due to simple misunderstandings all the time or not being sure yet and get back together stronger and wiser. In fact just look at your own recent break up with this woman as you said there was really nothing wrong no major incompatibility problem between you and her right? She just felt unsure and didn't want to be with you if she was not sure and had someone else on her mind all the time and as she said " still kept thinking about her ex and felt like if she didn’t try again with him she’d regret it ". If you think about it this is the more respectful thing to do. Im sure you would not want her with you if she was constantly thinking about someone else and would want her to be sure and only thinking about you. This is not a reflection of you or anything you did wrong although its understandable that you are taking it personally, its really just a person who wants to make sure your the right one and is not sure yet and it hurts because you are already sure and only thinking of her. I think with any relationship its a good idea to not assume that just because a breakup happened that getting back together and learning and becoming a healthier relationship is an impossibility and to completely close the door on getting back together.

@jennysunrise8 thanks for the comment, I appreciate the insight. I know that sometimes getting back together after a breakup can work out; however, the fact that she has already done that with that guy and it didn’t work out and she broke up with him again, makes me doubt that there wasn’t a relationship issue. I’m not trying to make it about me. I do just believe that if people leave a relationship they either think/know something better is out there for them. Since she’s been with this guy before it makes me feel like there is something she knows about him that she prefers to me. I’m wondering if it’s worth trying to talk to her to get some closure or if she’s just not going to give me anything. It’s not like she’s sparing my feelings, the damage is already done. I just want something to take away and have the opportunity to grow/change if I need to.

Maybe it’s just the fallacy of choice and she is just a “grass is always greener somewhere else” sort of person. I’m just tired of spending hours thinking about it because it makes no sense to me or I have some sort of information gap.

@selfdisciplinedJar1125 I think that is a great idea to try and contact her to get closure and ask her about anything you would like an answer to getting honest feedback about anything is how we learn and like you said it sounds like she will be direct and honest with you and not just try to spare your feelings. It might be that she does still have feelings for you but just wants to make sure that you are the right one and that regrets wont happen later in a much more committed relationship but only she knows really so yes just ask her to explain why and ask any questions you have.

@jennysunrise8 so I talked to her yesterday for about three hours and I don’t know if it helped or made things worse. On the one hand it was great to see her and talk to her and the conversation wasn’t awkward and flowed pretty well. I still couldn’t get a good answer on things she didn’t like about our relationship and/or me. She admitted she was acting selfishly by making the choice for me to end the relationship rather than show me her “darker side.” She just said she felt like she was hiding herself from me and just wanted me to remember the good stuff. She also said her ex knew how to deal with her which I get to an extent but she never even gave me the chance to show that I could. The fact that the relationship has failed twice before doesn’t give me much faith it will work out this time but I got the sense she feels like she needs to stick it out since that is the decision she made. She told me he flew out to see her this past weekend and told me they even had an argument at dinner and she texted one of her friends that she might have made a mistake and that she missed me. She said they talked it out later and it was fine but at some point he went through her messages and saw that and it started another argument that she said they got over. I didn’t want to be overly critical but two arguments including what I consider to be a decent invasion of privacy is not a great first weekend back together. She seemed to think otherwise and thinks they both communicate better this time around.

After leaving is when I started to regret my choice. I was hoping to get some closure and a reason to let go of my feelings for her but now I’m even more confused why she did what she did. I know it’s probably best to move on but I just don’t want to right now. She’s been texting me the past day as well so the no contact has kind of ended but now I feel weird about it knowing she has a new boyfriend and I still have strong feelings for her.

To me a few things that shes said and done indicate that she might not see arguments as a negative thing that should be avoided. First at the end of this when you communicated to her about the two arguments and how it "doesnt sound like a great first weekend back together" she disagreed and said the communication was better between them this time. She didnt say anything negative about the arguments or complain about his reactions or behavior that resulted in the arguments at all and did she seem surprised or upset that he went through her phone that resulted in another argument? Now she is texting you but has anything changed that would prevent him from going through her phone again seeing those texts to you and it causing more arguments? I know of course there are details and things shes said that i dont know about but from what you have shared these are a few things that are worth questioning and not really aligned with someone who wants to avoid conflict or perceives it as a negative thing some people see conflict as exciting and want that in their lives even though its unhealthy.

hi, first of all I apologize and trying not to be mean or judgmental in my response because in the end you would only know best how you feel. I quickly read through and to me, if you really respected her and treated her kindly, it seems unfair that she would bring this all up with you like this and be so blunt like this if she cared about saving your relationship. It seems unfair to me. It probably wouldn't hurt for you to take some time to process this all since it just happened.

I am so sorry this happened to you. I am also dealing with some things right now and an ex bf and I am still coming to terms with some stuff.

I can tell from your post that you are hurting and that it is difficult to make sense out of what is happening, why she did what she did. I get that. I can identify highly with you, as I am also a type of person who always seeks for something which needs improving after a failed relationship. I also had difficulties in making sense of the "why" of things and wasn't able to answer that question for a long time. I just want to encourage you that you will have the answer at some point, but certainly not right now. For me, it took almost a year and I am sure that for some people in some specific relationships it takes even longer. Most important is that you have faith in yourself and in life that things will work themselves out, that there indeed is a lesson behind all of this, although that lesson is not available for you yet. Even if things seem to have no sense at all right now, they certainly will make sense in the future. Whatsmore, in your particular situation, if I were you I would take my time to distance myself from the whole situation and from the girl. You already mentioned that you tried to seek for some closure, as well as from her personally. I personally find this futile, as in many cases people won't give us the truth in order to not hurt our feelings. I am not saying that she doesn't like/love you, but maybe that she doesnt like/love you enough. Love is not really an "yes" or "no" thing, I would rather look at it as a continuum and the truth always lies somewhere in between, rarely on the extremes. I think it would help you not to seek the fault/reason for the breakup in yourself and in the thought that for some reason "you are not enough", as this has absolutely nothing to do with your value as a person. It has everything to do with her, her life values, global beliefs, and what she values in a boyfriend. If she really has BPD, it might be the case that the constant conflicts and challenges with that other guy are somewhat of a comfort zone for her. When things are going smoothly like with you, she maybe needs another form of excitement, even if it is an unhealthy one. The closure you can draw from this is that maybe the two of you are just not the right fit for each other (as she has some other needs at this point of her life, or just other needs in general), even if it seemed that you were the perfect fit. I hope that this post provides some clarity to your situation and that you will feel better soon <3 I wish you all the best! Take care and speak kindly to yourself <3 :)

Such a hard situation but kudos to you for trying to better understand her diagnosis!

A few things that stood out to me...

- she appears to have self sabotaging behaviors, enjoying the moments but killing the relationship before anything can go wrong.

- along with self sabotage, self harm plays a big part in BPD. Sex, drugs, alcohol, and even putting oneself in bad relationships can be seen as "safe" ways to self harm.

- her former BF may be her "favorite person" and she may be struggling to change that attachment, possibly even unaware.

- emotions for those with BPD can often be more or less intense than they would typically be, which has an impact on the accuracy of memories as well. Things can be remembered as not as bad or so much better/worse than reality because of this. Meaning she may not recognize or be processing how unhealthy her previous relationship was OR it may have been great but she also sabotaged that one as well.

- as with most things no matter our mental health, any decision to move forward in a relationship with you will still have to be something she figures out and decides on her own.

In the meantime, you have things you can do.

- work on YOU: be the best person you can be for yourself and whomever you end up with in the future.

- enjoy your life, spend time with the people you love and doing the things you enjoy.

- let her know you are still there if she'd like to talk but don't stop living, let her become your sole focus, or jump right back into a physical relationship (per the self harm note above) should she return.

- work on learning what you can about BPD to support her should things work out but keep in mind that every person is impacted by the diagnosis differently and some things will need to be learned from her, not about her.

- if things do work out, ask to attend a few therapy sessions with her to learn more specific ways to communicate with and support her.

Hope this helps a little!
