Cold Shower Benefits for Your Health
Cold Shower
Cold showers are any showers with a water temperature below 70°F. They may have health benefits. Water therapy (also called hydrotherapy) has been used for centuries to take advantage of our body’s tendency to adapt to harsher conditions. As a result, our bodies become more resistant to stress. Cold showers are not a main source of treatment for any condition, but they may help improve symptom relief and general well-being.

Depression affects at least 10 percent of American adults, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. One holistic method of treatment that’s gaining popularity is hydrotherapy. Taking a cold shower for up to 5 minutes, 2 to 3 times per week, was shown to help relieve symptoms of depression in a clinical trial.
White fat is the fat we associate with conditions such as obesity and heart disease, but we are all born with brown fat. Researchers have found that brown fat plays an important role in adult health. Healthy levels of brown fat also indicate that white fat will be at a healthy level. And brown fat is activated by exposure to cold temperature.
Water that’s colder than our natural body temperature causes the body to work slightly harder to maintain its core temperature. When taken regularly, cold showers can make our circulatory system more efficient.
Helps fight off common illnesses
Our bodies are designed to become resistant to the elements we are exposed to. For example, leukocytes help fight infection in the body. The shock of cold water in the bloodstream stimulates leukocytes. This means that taking cold showers can help your resistance to common illnesses, like colds and the flu.
Cold showers are not a magical cure-all for any condition. They should be used as a supplement to traditional treatments, but not as a replacement.
Please remember that people taking medication for their mental health should not stop their drugs abruptly in favor of any alternative treatment. If you’re feeling sick, have recently been released from the hospital, or are otherwise immune-compromised, wait to try out cold showers. While the cold shower habit is beneficial for most people, the habit takes some getting used to. The body may be taxed by the process of getting used to it.
The ideal way to take a cold shower is to ease in to the habit.

@innateJoy9602 I'm very glad you are interested in hydrotherapy! Cold showers can be indeed very beneficial when used as adviced and as a supplemental therapy. I have found another interesting article comparing hot and cold showers, you can check it out if you'd like!

Thank you for reading!
I love cold showers!! They feel amazing.
I live in a desert like climate so taking a cold shower after being outside all day helps. I used to take cold showers even in extremely cold weather BUT that's after an intense workout that warms up my body... I still take hot showers out of habit, but find myself switching back to cold right after.... I lost a lot of weight and am currently underweight, I suspect that's why I've been getting cold easy.... I've been skinny/lanky for most my life only fit/bulked up for a few years, but now I'm severely underweight...
I'm going to try with cold showers again, I took one earlier in the morning today and felt relieved.~ Going to take another a night! Thank you for your post! 🙏
@ImpudentIncognito Thank you so much for reading and for sharing your experience! Cold showers can speed up metabolism but this may not be the only cause. They can be beneficial in many ways but not for everyone. You should always take a physician's advice to be sure. Please take care of yourself first and remember you are beautiful <3
I like cold showers because it seems to help me sleep better. There was a time where I used to jump right into an ice-cold spray but these days I start with the dial at lukewarm and once I’m in, I just take the temperature down in steps, about a 25-degree turn if the dial every 3-4 seconds. Faster if I feel brave. It might be a good way to ease into the cold shower life.
@pluckyEast40 That's great! It's indeed importnat to pass through these stages in order to get used to it! Cold showers can be very beneficial and can contribute to releasing stress. So it can definitely help someone to sleep better. I'm starting to like cold showers too and surprisingly I find it hard to switch to hot water sometimes. Thank you for sharing your thoughts!
@calmDew1576 I've heard a lot of people praising cold showers but I find it hard to make up my mind to do it. But this article might have given me the push I needed. Thanks for sharing!

There's the feeling called the 'cold shock' or something like that when your body naturally shivers after being hit with a cold spray of water. Apparently that phenomenon on its own can bring benefits to your body including good blood flow. Both hot and cold water therapy have their benefits and merits!
@sunnyWriting4806 That's so true! They both have benefits and it's good to incorporate both in your routine at different times/days and that's what I'm currently trying to do myself. Thank you for sharing your thoughts!
@sunnyWriting4806 Wow. Thanks for sharing that info!
I don't think I have tried taking a cold shower before, but I do like to take a dip in our pool which I find really refreshing. I mostly take warm / hot baths in our big jacuzzi tub, I do that while playing some nature sounds to relax.
