What Is Apathy and Why Do You Feel So Empty Inside?
“Emptiness is a lack of any feeling at all.
It can happen when you’re stressed, anxious, or depressed. Or it can happen when you are in a state of shock and don’t allow yourself to feel anything.
You might also feel emptiness when cutting yourself off from your emotions because you don’t deserve to feel them. This is called emotional numbing. It’s a way of trying to protect yourself from pain.
The cause of apathy
Apathy is not an emotion. It’s a lack of emotion. When you ignore your feelings, they stop growing. and, like a seed left in the dark. You might not know it, but inside you are many emotions that are all waiting to be heard, accepted, and loved. They want you to acknowledge them and then give them a chance to express themselves. They are love and joy, guilt and shame.
How to turn your apathy into action
Think about the last time you felt sad. You might have been crying or desperately wanted a friend to hug you. But did you allow yourself to feel sad? Instead, you might have immediately tried to cheer yourself up or told yourself that you shouldn’t feel that way.
- What if you allowed yourself to feel sad instead of trying to turn off your emotions?
- What if you said to yourself, “It’s okay to feel sad right now”?
Your emotions are not bad or negative. Guilt, shame, sadness, and fear are normal human emotions.
You might not know it, but every time you deny yourself a feeling, you’re not only blocking yourself from feeling it now but also storing it inside you.
A few words about guilt and shame
- Do you feel guilty about something that happened in the past?
- Are you ashamed of something you did?
Guilt and shame are very painful emotions, but they are also one of the most important emotions.
- Showing yourself that you care about others and your life.
- Urging you to make a change, repair the damage you’ve done, or stop a behavior.
Guilt and shame are extremely important emotions. They are not signs of weakness; they are signs of strength and empathy.”

Yes, I believe it's normal for anyone to feel apathetic even in a person/ thing or situation specific way, and not in the completely feeling feeling-less way also. As this article mentions, it's sometimes a way of coping with overwhelming and/ or difficult emotions by avoiding/ delaying/ blocking them for the time too. Numb over awful feels more tempting/ inclined towards at times heh. :')
However yes, blocking emotions for longer could really circle back to us at a later date and create internal/ emotional chaos, as I feel, sometimes emotions find a way of rushing back to us, seeping inside again in the most mysterious ways, during the most random times too. It is rather difficult handling all of them at once, so definitely helps and should be okay to take it one at a time.
A certain amount of self-introspection, "sitting with our feelings" even if they feel heavy or nothing at once is necessary, I guess, something I try to work on also (and struggle too). We can always try to find safe spaces for our emotions and let them simply flow at our pace, yes and yes.❤
Something worth reflecting more on and working more on for sure, thanks for sharing, Joy!💛

Well said, as always Sun! I feel all emotions are normal. I believe if they were not normal, we wouldn't be able to experience them at all. But, we do. So, it's nice to find the balance between healthy and unhealthy. It makes sense that, at times, feeling numb over horrible is more alluring and enticing.
Also, exactly. Being mindful to take things one at a time can be less intimidating. I am a strong believer in breaking things into pieces. Introspection is my favorite word. Sometimes it's hard to sit with our feelings and process them. There are time we would rather look for distractions to avoid that. But, there can be a lot of power in self-reflection.
Thanks for your insightful thoughts Sun!💜
@innateJoy9602 Aw thankyou, and I'm glad you're on the same page also, Joy. You're amazing at what you do and it's so appreciated.💜

@innateJoy9602 Have you ever felt empty or apathy?
More then I should I'm sure. I try not to block emotions but it happens automatically. Most of the time I don't even notice it until I start to drift farther away from everything. Everything just shuts down and it's almost as if I forget how to be a human. Just a shell of a person going through the motions, pretending to live :/

blocking emotions is easier than feeling them. Especially when they are the
tough ones. Always here for you soul. Sending many hugs!💜💜💜
