What Is Aromatherapy?

Aromatherapy is a holistic practice in which people inhale or smell essential oils. It has been shown to carry many benefits for wellness and stress relief. Studies have shown that aromatherapy does indeed have an effect on the brain and can alter behavior.

How Scents Affect Mental Health

Essential oils have been used for centuries for healing both physical and mental ailments. Among their reported benefits are improving memory and attention, creating a calming effect, preventing inflammation and illness, and more. But how can smelling something affect how we feel?

The olfactory bulb in the brain is responsible for our sense of smell. The olfactory bulb is connected to the hippocampus and the amygdala, which are parts of the brain responsible for memory and emotions, respectively.

Essential oils can be smelled or absorbed through the skin via massage or by soaking in a bathtub. Most often, people do aromatherapy by using one or more of the following:

  • Aroma sticks (also called inhalers, they are portable objects that absorb the oil)

  • Aromatic spritzers

  • Body creams, oils, or lotions
  • Diffusers
  • Facial steamers

  • Salts (to use in the bath)

Rosemary

Rosemary is associated with feelings of contentment, and it’s been shown to have positive effects on performance and mood. Rosemary can reduce cortisol levels, which can help relieve anxiety and stress.

Lavender

The scent of lavender is associated with feeling calm, and for good reason. It can lower your blood pressure, calm your nervous system, and even improve your mood.

Peppermint

Peppermint aromatherapy has been found to:

  • Boost mental function

  • Help clear coughs and colds

  • Lower stress levels

  • Reduce physical pain

Ylang-Ylang

Ylang-ylang promotes calmness and reduces stress, making it a good option for unwinding and de-stressing at the end of a long day. Inhaling ylang-ylang can actually slow your breathing and your heart rate, so it may help people who are in shock or have experienced trauma.

Lemon

Research has shown that lemon oil may possess antidepressant effects. It is a good choice for stress relief and mood enhancement as well.

Frankincense

Frankincense has cognitive effects such as increased alertness. Some research suggests that frankincense may actually improve memory as well.

Bergamot

Like lavender, bergamot essential oil also contains linalool, which helps reduce blood pressure and anxiety. Studies of the effects of bergamot essential oil mixed with other essential oils has shown that people experienced:

  • Improvements in depression symptoms

  • Reduced heart rate

  • Relief of pain

  • Stress reduction

Lemongrass

Inhaling lemongrass can help cool down body temperature, especially during warm weather.

Conclusion

Aromatherapy can be a fun and easy way to de-stress. You can try different scents and find out which ones you like best. However, aromatherapy is usually a complementary treatment, which means it shouldn't take the place of other physical or mental health treatments. If you are seeking treatment for a health condition, be sure to reach out to a doctor or mental health professional.

My favorite fall scent is definitely pumpkin spice or anything to do with apples.

However in my defuser I like using scents like lemon or lavender or orange or coconut or peppermint or honey and probably more. I am not surprised those scents have those affects.

On my skin and hair I love to use products with coconut oil in them.

@LovingPeacefulHeart ooh so many amazing smells to choose from. Coconut oil is heavenly for both hair and skin, I agree hehe.

Thankyou for tagging me, Heart!❤

I may go a bit off the fall vibe here xD but I love vanilla smells always, I recently got a vanilla scented candle, and it is so sweet and creamy (???) with notes of nutmeg, cinnamon etc, so yumm, I want to sometimes dive inside lolllll.

Besides that, I love the earthy smell, petrichor something haha? Still eyeing on this petrichor scented perfume I heard about hehe (yes, it exists) and may buy it soon yayyy! ❤

Thankyou for this wonderful article, @calmdew1576, aromatherapy can definitely be calming, and helpful with anxiety and stress as well, hope to try it more authentically sometime, with essential oils etc! 🥰

Tagging someone who I know for sure loves this already, @SparkyGizmo 🤗

Hi Calm! 😊❤️ Great forum post! I really enjoyed reading this! *high fives* 😊 and *hugs* ❤️

Hi Good Day Sunshine! 😊❤️ Thank you for tagging me! Soooooo amazing that you know scent is really and truly a very big thing for me! Glad you like certain scents as well!

I love perfume, richly scented lotions and soaps. I like sachets for drawers. I love scented candles, scented bath salts, bubble bath and even what are called "tarts" or "wax melts". These are pre-formed scented wax that can be placed into a "tart burner" whether it be candle driven for heat underneath or electric (I have both). I also like putting cloves, cinnamon sticks and orange peels submerged in water on the stove top or in a crock pot to infuse my space with lovely scents of the season!

I like so many different scents! Sometimes it depends upon the season and sometimes my mood as to what type of "human air freshener" lol, I want to be for the day! 😊 Scent can have a way of relaxing me, invigorating me, set me up for restful sleep (oops, forgot to mention my linen/pillow sprays) and even signify the completion of a hard days work.

It's great for me to light a scented candle at the end of the day. This can be an "on/off" switch for some. I don't do that every day but after a lot of hard work, lighting my candles has a relaxing effect, telling myself it's "me" time now. I love the scents as well as seeing the low light of the flickering flames to set the tone for relaxing, turning off technology (except for tv or a movie if that is in the plan) and snuggling up under a quilt with pillows and maybe a good book. Even good for rainy days outside. It's what I call "creating my own sunshine" and just enjoying the rain also while seeing the pretty sights of candles and smelling their beauty as well.

As an aside, as Good Day Sunshine already knows (and because of their nickname that I passed along) listening to "Good Day Sunshine" by the Beatles helps to create my own sunshine too, if it's not sunny out. Hard to not feel joyful while listening to that one! New addition to the mix "Here comes the Sun", yup, Beatles, once again! Enjoy your "name sakes" Spidey Twin! Weeeeeeeee Weeeeeeeee! 😊

*high fives* 😊 and big *hugs* ❤️
