ChatGPT and 7cups - where is the future headed?
I have no idea where to post this since I couldn't find any relevant categories, but....
I just wanted to talk about ChatGPT and GPT-3 and the new age of AI. I see this as being both a good and bad for 7cups and mental health care in general. let's say there was a way to train a GPT robot to learn how to respond like the top-rated listeners here. It might be able to mimick and respond nearly as well as a real human being. So if it helps more people, thats great, right? but how does the member feel when they know that nobody is actually listening to them and it's just a software algorithm to print words on a webpage? I think most of us would say the words have no meaning if they came from a robot. But this is the age we live in now, and it wont be long before people use/abuse it on this website - and every other website too!
is 7cups going to research an AI component (please dont bring up noni, its a great attempt but thats not true AI, it's just a humanized avatar that says pre-programmed lines, nothing like a real GPT bot) to leverage it to help people? Or is GPT and other AI language software going to be banned from the site due to it being fake and harmful? I'm just curious what people think. @GlennM @rarelyCharlie
Of course good human listener are the best. but i have to come to defend the AI chat. there is room for something in the middle. some people are too anxious to seek out human listeners or ask humans too private or difficult questions. Bot comes as a safe alternative (except for privacy concerns of course) and a training ground for interactions. i played with chatGPT enough and asked as much relationship questions, that i came across some gem responses that helped me to see the bigger picture that i didn't see before.
basically, it's just a tool that you can use to your advantage. of course, like with any other tool, you can misuse it to hurt yourself or others.
With respect @LostTurtle2, it's not like any other tool. Sure, any took can hurt you if you're careless with it but no other tool could decide to hurt you.
@FrozenGhost
So as Humans 😅. We are responsible of what we share or use, it doesn't matter if it's an AI or another living thing 🤷♀️.
Wondering if an AI might play a surrogate role, in the same way as a good therapist or listener, in training someone what is possible to expect in a positive relationship with a real person that one day might happen their way?
I've only joined 7cups maybe two hours ago, and this was one of my first thoughts! AI and robots can never replace true human empathy. AI could replace noni for a smoother conversation/initial consultation (please forgive me noni), but it could never replace listeners or the group chats that 7cups offers
@compassionateBalloon6666 personally i would not like to see that happen because in my perspective a lot of the times the listener is also being helped by the act of listening itself and that is invaluable too, the growth is twofold in this way, and sure the AI can learn patterns and become great at listening but what about the connection? What about the growth of the listener itself?
What we would loose would be far too much to be an advantage. The sense of community and not being alone is also very important i think.
@VoiceinWind
Excellent observation. I bet if an AI were to say the exact same thing as a real therapist, the effect wouldn't be the same (it would be worse). But that doesn't exclude the possibility that the AI could somehow learn its own "therapeutic style" that might maximize user responses and that style might not sound like anything a human would say. in other words, maybe it will learn a new way to talk to people that somehow is effective? Maybe certain styles of speaking that would offend or frustrate a client (maybe being blunt, or slightly judgemental) wouldn't be offensive if the client knew they were from an A.I. and not a person? Not saying there is a benefit in being rude to someone, just pointing out that AI might open up new avenues that wouldn't be possible in a human-human relationship. But even if the AI developed some kind of new, successful way to help a group of people, its still owned by one of a few corporations that control the A.I. models, so they'd naturally just put it behind a paywall and try to monetize every last dollar out of it. :sigh:

Why?
I have revised my view after diving into the rabbit hole of information about AI.
I understand that it is part of our present, however I would say to use with caution. There are dangers in machines with memory and endless electricity compiling information to please someone to serve them. In many ways it's like fascism. The person who controls the machines also controls the humans. There are frightening consequences for real people in real time with the use of AI.
Hallucinations and Hallucitations are just the start of it. Use with caution.

@compassionateBalloon6666 Thanks for posting this topic discussion! I think AI and mental health support is a very current theme, because clearly there are lots of shortcomings in our current way of doing things, and many people lack the help they need, and it makes sense that AI might be able to help.
I was watching a podcast on youtube the other day, it made me think about mental healthcare and 7 Cups in a different way. The real value of 7 Cups isn't that is it is providing people with more accessible mental health help, but the REAL value of 7 Cups is that it has training and teaches people how to care for others who then provide the help. In a sense it is the complete opposite of AI, AI is eliminating our human interaction while 7 Cups is increasing it. So yes maybe there are some automated things that can be done on the back end of the site. Sure an AI bot can listen to people. However I find the real learning and connection comes when we mess up (just a little bit) sometimes. Sometimes I learn something new when I say something wrong, or when someone else says something wrong. Personally I find its in the imperfection of what I say that lets someone know they are talking to another human and vice versa.
I recently went looking for AI apps that could listen and help people because I know a few people who have felt judged and misunderstood by their therapists (myself included). I felt kind of upset and disappointed in humanity for a minute, there are all these people needing mental health help...then we go seek it out and we get put in a box and judged based on their box they put us in. I realize now an AI bot isn't the answer, more training and education in how we treat each other is needed.
I think living in such an automated world makes us feel less human as it is. So yes things will get more automated and the world will change, some things for the better and some things for the worse. I guess I see the real challenge right now - is how do we remain human, in an ever so automated world that values efficiency and commodification as they way it measures value and importance. So much of our mental health issues are from the endless toil of working and existing like a machine as it is. How do we create and maintain and foster our humanity and connection with each other, is the bigger question - because AI is really out of our hands.
(I'll stand by for the AI bot to disagree with me. LOL)
@Heart4art Just posting that this is such a thoughtful reply and really on target. Yes, teaching humans to be human! Sounds revolutionary but really so simple isn't it!
This is from today's paper. About everyday uses for AI. It's not all bad, not all good. Proceed with caution, but it's here!
