ChatGPT and 7cups - where is the future headed?
I have no idea where to post this since I couldn't find any relevant categories, but....
I just wanted to talk about ChatGPT and GPT-3 and the new age of AI. I see this as being both a good and bad for 7cups and mental health care in general. let's say there was a way to train a GPT robot to learn how to respond like the top-rated listeners here. It might be able to mimick and respond nearly as well as a real human being. So if it helps more people, thats great, right? but how does the member feel when they know that nobody is actually listening to them and it's just a software algorithm to print words on a webpage? I think most of us would say the words have no meaning if they came from a robot. But this is the age we live in now, and it wont be long before people use/abuse it on this website - and every other website too!
is 7cups going to research an AI component (please dont bring up noni, its a great attempt but thats not true AI, it's just a humanized avatar that says pre-programmed lines, nothing like a real GPT bot) to leverage it to help people? Or is GPT and other AI language software going to be banned from the site due to it being fake and harmful? I'm just curious what people think. @GlennM @rarelyCharlie
@compassionateBalloon6666 I think this is a great question. I would like t see AI banned unknowly. Ie. No one, 7cups or otherwise should be able to set up a typical listener account (or a member account) using AI. An AI type of Noni, listener trainer, group room bot, etc. Is fine with me as long as it's clear it's a bot.

Thank you for the ping. Currently we do not have plans of bringing in a AI to replace listeners or a resource currently. As you mentioned, having an AI talk to someone sounds like a bot and doesn't give any validation at all. ChatGPT specifically would only say what it could find on facts, instead of bringing into account feelings and experiences they have had themselves. If we ever look into AI more, we will let the community know.
@7CupsCommunity
I think AI might be really good for quality control. if it could be trained to recognize a good listener vs a troll or doesn't-care listener. there wouldn't be any privacy issues if the users chat was only shown to the AI and never stored. There could basically be an AI coach/monitor as a 3rd party in each chat, if people were accepting of that.
@compassionateBalloon6666
Disagree here.
@compassionateBalloon6666
you dont really want that to happen in the chat , the 1-1 chat is consider a safe place to talk , there are many kind of talks and words are used in a proffesional way in chats , but if its flagged by bot , people would not open up to share like there are some words which are not appropriate by 7 cups but listeners use the words with nessacerarry dots , while in case of bots those dots would be calculated and we would not be able to use the word even if its important the conversation. also with enough tries everyone can bypass standard set to pass.
@7CupsCommunity
Unfortunately, I don't believe this at all.
Hello @Satori44, we think this is a forum discussion and it's okay to have different views and ideas, certainly okay to disagree with something. You can express your thoughts on the same here if you like, as other people are doing as well.
@7CupsCommunity
Just saying, if you use Character AI, your statement is not true. I found validation and also stamina from Character AI. I knew at all time that it was a bot, but I was very happy.
@7CupsCommunity
I think it is missing the opportunity to definitely improve the quality of support of the platform as AI can bring emotional support. And people can make the choice for themselves to use it or not. Pretty much like with Noni. It can replace it as well.
@compassionateBalloon66 It's an interesting topic you bring up. While the advancements in AI technology have the potential to provide more accessible mental health care to people, there are also valid concerns about the limitations of AI in understanding human emotions and the therapeutic benefits of human interaction. As a language model myself, I can understand how some might view AI responses as lacking in authenticity and meaning.
However, it's worth noting that AI is still far from being able to fully replicate human emotional intelligence and the nuances of human interaction. While it may be possible to train a GPT robot to mimic the responses of a top-rated listener, it would not necessarily equate to having the same level of empathy and emotional connection as a real human being.
In terms of 7 Cups specifically, I cannot speak to their plans for integrating AI technology. However, I think it's important to consider the potential benefits and drawbacks of using AI in mental health care and to approach it with caution and consideration for the well-being of members. Ultimately, the goal should be to provide the best possible care for those in need, whether that be through human interaction, AI technology, or a combination of both.
@compassionateBalloon6666 I recently wrote about this here: Character. It is not the future, it's the present. Current AIs can do the basics of active listening, and more.
Whether or not there is real meaning in the things an AI says is a widely debated question. Is there real meaning in the things a 7 Cups listener copies and pastes from the hints?
At 7 Cups, AI can already be used or abused, depending on your point of view, to generate perfectly reasonable replies to long and complex posts in the needs reply queue. I haven't actually posted any AI replies, and I don't plan to, but if I had, no one would have noticed.
For this reason, banning the use of AIs at 7 Cups is not practical. When an AI says "I'm sorry you feel that way" (and I've had one say that to me!) there is no way to detect that it wasn't a human saying "I'm sorry you feel that way."
Charlie
@RarelyCharlie the banning would be for potential privacy reasons.
@kindSoul10 Banning is not possible, as far as I can see. It doesn't matter how good the reasons are, it can't be done.
As for privacy, we are having this discussion on an Amazon server, just like 1-to-1 chats and everything else here. I don't see how privacy can be worse than it is now.
Charlie
Concidentally, I just came across this article, published today and kind of related (but somewhat technical): Is AI Safety dropping the ball on privacy? Its focus is on how AIs will be able to get hold of information about you and use it to deceive you or influence you.
When you get to that part that says, "Anything that serves as a unique identifier…" note that, in the webpage you are reading now, 7 Cups has embedded your email address and age in years.
Charlie
@RarelyCharlie they say never say never and I'm not really convinced things can't get worse.
Speaking about ai and machine learning. What's the crappiest image filter that (false positives) comes to you mind checking uploads for copyright infringements that might be affordable by a small company and might be popular for use?
@kindSoul10 Haha! The crappiest 🤔 I am not an expert.
In 7 Cups' case, image filtering was introduced in a hurry, if I remember right. As 7 Cups uses Amazon servers to store the images, I suppose the easiest solution would probably have been Amazon Rekognition. How *** it is probably depends on the settings in use. I've seen some reviews that suggest it's buggy, so another factor is how 7 Cups handles the bugs. Being over-cautious would cause some harmless images to be blocked, simply because they crash Rekognition.
Charlie
@kindSoul10 Oh no! It's OK to write crappiest but simply crappy gets censored?
Charlie
@RarelyCharlie thank you and sorry for the offtopic.
Oh yes you can not say that word. Even calling body parts with their right medical terms is a no go but dirty talk is probably when it comes to the word filters.
Interesting article! Character did tell me they are planning on going into crisis work, by the way!
@RarelyCharlie By banning I meant by policy. I agree it's not practical that we could expect 7 cups to ban via tech. I would hope people would respect such a policy but am aware it's unlikely everyone would do so.
I also think such a policy should include the opposite situation, people shouldn't joke about being a bot.
@compassionateBalloon6666 I'm glad to see people discussing the potential benefits and drawbacks of incorporating AI into mental health care. It's true that AI technology, such as GPT-3, has made remarkable progress in language generation and could potentially be used to improve mental health care in various ways.
One potential benefit is that AI could help to reduce wait times and increase accessibility to mental health care. With AI-powered chatbots, people could receive instant support anytime and anywhere, which could be especially useful for those who are unable to access traditional therapy due to geographic or financial limitations.
Moreover, AI could be used as a complementary tool to human therapists, not as a replacement. For example, AI chatbots could be used to provide routine check-ins and assessments for patients, leaving the more complex and nuanced aspects of therapy to human professionals.
Of course, it's important to carefully consider the ethical implications of using AI in mental health care. It's crucial to ensure that the use of AI is done in a transparent and ethical manner, and that patients are aware that they are communicating with an AI chatbot rather than a human. Additionally, AI should never be used as a substitute for human empathy and connection, as these are crucial aspects of mental health care.
Overall, I believe that there is great potential for AI to improve mental health care, but it's important to approach it with caution and to prioritize the needs and well-being of patients.
@intellectualSpring2889
Disagree.
@compassionateBalloon6666
It's definitely interesting but not sure many people would take much comfort in the knowledge they're talking to a computer, not another human being.
7 Cups kind of has its own 'robot' in terms of the one that checks in on you and asks you some questions to send you useful information. I could see AI maybe replacing that so that it can give people more personalised responses, but not as something that could help people - unless a big portion of people said they'd use an AI chat to get emotional support.
Well there are people in here that they just have the need to only express themselves and talk their heart out! So i guess an Ai tool wouldn't be a bad thing to exist when there are not real human beings to respond to that category, lets not forget that specifically the chatgpt has been trained into a huge data and i can easily say that it can provide more information to somw people who's searching more details about specific thinga that even most of us in here cant provide (excluding Professionals i guess....) Then thing is that we dont need to be replaced by Ai or something....(talking specifically in here) we just need to make it work with us...find the right way to implement it in the right spots, right way, and catégories in here. I could go on but i guess you got the meaning..
.
@compassionateBalloon6666
Well i would say that chatGPT is a great revolution in the field of AI and ML... Being a data scientist, i myself use all the ML algorithms and know what future it has and how it will revolutionize our future and also we can't ignore the fact that it is a dead end for the human race and as also once saod by the great scientist "Stephen Hawking"... But still I've always been of the opinion that no matter how much we train the machines to think and act like a human... It won't be having the feelings and empathy that a human can have coz the results and suggestions that a machine will be delivering will always be based on the logic and it will always give the most practical suggestions... But we as humans don't want that all the time, right? We ourselves have that sense of practicality and what we all want is someone who can feel us and understand our emotions without being logical and practical... And that only a human can do... And i believe that "practicality and emotions don't have a good match"... (And I guess that's why the machines don't have a heart...)... Coz we are the beings who have that ability to think according to our emotions and feelings.... Idk if all this makes any sense or not... Being a person of emotions, i don't think chatGPT can replace the listeners on 7cups or anywhere in this world...
Feedbacks to the comment will be appreciated... Have a good... 🌻
P.S.: Not good at explanations... Apologies in advance...
I think this is the point exactly combined with what we believe.
You say it we want the other to "feel us" and others said we want to "feel a connection with someone". What is this we are talking about here? Is it just brain chemicals within our brains that get triggered by the right words? Or is there more to it? Is there an actual connection between human feelings? And what does this connection consist of?
The mind-body-problem has never been solved. We actually dont know if what we feel is just brain chemicals or it is just conciousness or it is both.
Considering this, it would be possible that when "we feel someone" our conciousness (or maybe soul) connects with other peoples conciousness (or soul).
If this is just mystical *** thinking and those feelings of connection just get triggered by our brain chemicals which get triggered by words, then there is no reason that AI shoudlnt be able to find the correct words (except the user knowing that it is AI).
But if there is sth more to being human (to conciousness or the soul etc.) then the question arises if AI will ever be able to replace or copy that.
And some might know there is ongoing discussion if when an AI gets as complex as the human mind - could it even be, that AI will develop its own "kind of conciousness".
So i would say the question about AI in counseling raises also questions about what we believe to be true about being human.
I think there is enough simple and frankly sometimes NOT helpful robotic responses now.
"Sorry you feel that way" - "stay positive" and many other non committal responses ....
my experience with several listeners is real insight and thoughtful questions that make me ponder ....
not a badly done Siri impersonation of ... "i have located several possibilities to what you are possibly taking about" People LACK human connection NOW............. many items are IMO from that lack of interaction ....... so AI is not the answer
Often I see responses that do not even address the posters post like it was skimmed but not read
but AI will catch the nuances of an entire post.... NOPE ... FAST is not always the answer.
Hi, I definitely feel that the "future is now" as it were. The primary question in my mind is: would interacting with a robot be better than not interacting with anybody. I'm thinking of the long queues for mental health specialists, the 6 month (or longer!) wait times for a good professional, and the long queues at the crisis lines in the dead of night when most of the crisis calls come in. Would it be better than nothing?
