Sometimes we just need to hear a certain phrase for us to feel comforted and happy.

Say something to yourself that you'd most like to hear right now. heart

I will support you in any decision you make about your body, gender, and sexuality. It's your heart and mind that I cherish most, and all I want is you to feel happiness and be happy.

Instead of what I've always wished I could hear, let's go with imagining the thing I most want to hear that's actually within the realm of possibility, though still heavily dosed with wish-fulfillment:

"I love you, and I've always loved you. I'm sorry about how I handled things back then, and I wish I could take away the hurt that I caused you. Your love for me was never a nuisance; I was heartbroken that I didn't feel what you felt, and I was so afraid I was going to lose you as my friend. I'm sorry I expressed that as anger at you or frustration with your affection for me. You are still handsome to me, and I do still have feelings for you. I've even fantasized about you at times, wondering what it would have been like if we'd gotten together. I know how deeply you love me, but I don't think you know that I know, and I don't think you understand how special you are to me. I will always love you no matter what. I know you can't be my husband, but your friendship means the world to me, and I want you to promise me you'll always be a part of my life."

It's not exactly what I want, but what I want isn't possible. If she told me this...it would help.

@reservedexcitment It's a weird exercise to put words into someone else's mouth. But at the same time, I already hear her voice in my head a lot of the time; it's become the voice of my insecurities and self-criticism, even though this hurt was caused many years ago and I know that at least some of the things I said here she probably does actually think. Obviously the part about still being attracted to me was my most outrageous bit of wish-fulfillment fantasy, but I have no doubt that she loves me as her friend. And I think she would be upset to know that it's her voice my depression uses to speak to me.

So what's weird for me in this exercise is to appropriate her voice to say affectionate and loving things to myself. I usually imagine her reacting to knowledge of my feelings much like she did the first time around: with annoyance, anger, and flat dismissal. It's unfair to her, but that wound never healed, and my depression is despicable in how it portrays the people I love most as indifferent, irritable doppelgangers.

@Faramir depression is a mind warp. It uses the same pieces of facts but makes different conclusions and is extremely deceptive at times, one sometimes has no clue as to it's happening.

I hope you find peace.

@Faramir

I wish so much that you two could be together, that was so heartfelt, and I know the pain a heart has when separated from the one it belongs with. Is there nothing you can do? Say something to her?

Even if she doesn't respond, at least she knows. You did your part.

@Faramir Can understand what you wrote completely. You just put words out of my mouth here. I know how it feels but I really hope that you find someone who will love you for the rest of your life. And will love you so much that this feeling would be( maybe) there, but it would be so awesome to be with that person that it would convert all your fears and sadness into contentment and fulfillment. I hope it happens soon. And before that could happen you should be someone who cares, loves and fulfills thyself. I know love is an amazing feeling, so make it feel for yourself first up to the brim. You know,

I came here to say that I wish I'd hear that I'm loved, appreciated, valued, seen, worth something to the world.

But you know what? People do tell me these things. My husband, my mother, my two closest friends, my dogs -- they all tell me this, and I'm pretty sure they do their best to show me. But my problem is that for some reason I seem to be incapable of hearing it, of knowing it, of feeling it.

I don't need to hear these things, I need to believe them. I need to allow myself to feel my worth. To trust that I am valued and appreciated and loved. I need to say these things to myself --genuinely and with conviction. This is what I need.

But it's so, so hard.

Why is this so hard?

@JanieRose writing these things down in a book and reading them often, especially when down, has helped some.

Also, trying to convince yourself in thr same way you make up reasons and find examples for friends that say the same thing, also has helped others.

Just some thoughts! :)

Hi, Reserved. Thank you so much for this advice -- especially the writing it down part. I think I might try this and that it might help.

Thank you.
