Sometimes we just need to hear a certain phrase for us to feel comforted and happy.

Say something to yourself that you'd most like to hear right now. heart

You're a great person. You are loved. You have a big heart and are an awesome friend. Don't worry about these fake people that bail on you and keep hurting you. You deserve better and you will find it.

I'm proud of you for all the effort you put into trying to improve your life and mental health. Most of the work is done before you even do a single task, like washing dishes. It makes sense why you're so tired all the time. It takes away your energy, mental focus, and drains you emotionally to have to constantly be at war with yourself.

So I'm saying, take the pressure off yourself to perform like everyone else. You wouldn't make demands of a friend to perform like everyone else if you knew how they felt and what they went through was just like what you're going through right now. So there's no need to compare yourself to others. There's no need to make demands and judge yourself. What will happen, what progress you make; it'll all happen at its own pace in time. Growth can't be forced to happen any faster than it can happen.

Self-judgement and placing demands on yourself only remind yourself of how you're not "measuring up;" as if you can do everything your peers can do and more while also battling mental health disorders and an abuse history they don't and probably never have been forced to deal with before. Self-judgement and demands only wear you down and punish you, ignoring how much effort you're putting in internally and externally, just to be able to get by. Punishment leads to demotivation, which can actually make you less likely to make progress.

Self-acceptance and self-compassion help you improve your understanding of yourself and help you feel better in the moment so that you increase your chances that you can move forward and make some progress. Self-judgement and demands aren't necessary and likely hold you back.

And when someone makes demands or judges you for not meeting their expectations, thank them for wanting something better for you and implying that you're capable of more, and that you're doing your best and that this is what your best looks like today. Then excuse yourself.

Remind yourself that, just like you can't experience the internal struggle of a friend, they cannot experience your internal struggle. Further, a caring person who wants to help seeks to draw out what struggles their interlocutor is experiencing, uses active listening skills to help them feel heard and supported, then considers if there's anything that can be done to help improve the situation for their IL so they can become more effective. A person who makes demands and doesn't care enough to seek what's going on isn't interested in helping. They cannot see beyond themselves and their own wants and needs. Inevitably, we all make this mistake once in a while. If this person is doing it on a regular basis, they probably don't have the skills necessary to be effective themselves, in which case, it would be wise to limit contact with such an individual, if you can.

They can't know your internal experience, just as you can't know theirs. What matters is that we try to bridge build and understand one another. Someone who isn't willing to do that isn't going to have an informed opinion (especially if they've just met you) or the helpful attitude you need to get through this difficult time.

When relating to yourself, try to be the friend who seeks to understand your inner experience, who grants patience, who offers praise, who tries to unburden you, who offers comfort, who cares about your needs and limits, who wants to help you feel better and do better. Someone who loves you.
