Broke up due to depression

Recently my boyfriend broke up with me after being together for a little over a year. We met in my hometown where we went to the same school together but as soon as university came, we went different ways and tried to keep the relationship going. We did stay together for more than half of the school year but broke up with only under two months left. He has had depression since before we got together and has struggled with it throughout the relationship. I began to struggle with insecurities especially when university came and these two things weve dealt with clashed at times but every time we visited in person we had amazing times. I did not expect this breakup to happen and he told me its because he needs to focus on himself since his mental health is extremely low right now and wants me to work on myself too. He has also turned to drugs to cope. I still am in love with him and I know he is too. I would love to be together again but he doesnt seem certain on anything right now. He said he wants to leave the door open for us to be together again and we could revisit the situation once school ends. Do I move on from him or still keep hopeful while I do my best to focus on myself?
