Well, sometimes people don't really mean what they say. Unfortunetly.

Maybe he said that out of guilt? Or maybe with time he stopped caring? I can't really say for sure, people's reactions are so subjective.

Now when it comes to his mother. Sometimes parents get in the way. Maybe she really liked you as a person, and specially as a partner for his son. Maybe she's trying to give you a message of "please don't give up on him". Again this is all in theory but it made sense with what you said.

And all of this said, you need to move on. A friendship with an ex works but is really rare. And works when both people want it and are confortable with it. If he isn't caring at all anymore, don't give him the time of day. Even if weeks after he comes back with guilt.

Life is too short to wait for people and do everything for them.

Move on. I'm sure breaking up was already hard on you. Now is your turn to heal, to love yourself, to find your way :)

best of luck! heart

Hey there, hopefully you are doing well. There's a few things I would like to point out;

So my ex who cried and said he didnt want to lose me as a friend (The way he cried seems irrational to me...crying and tantrums is the way he learned to get his needs met. I could tell he has some abandonment issues, so he tried to cling on you) when he broke up with me (while we were abroad and left me there alone) seems to be avoiding me. (It's mess up the way he left you there alone, it shows how unconsiderate he is) We met once after I got back to try to start the friendship thing off but since then he has made excuses (This shows low interest in seeing you) and organised things over group meetings I have organised and hasnt been messaging me. (He doesn't really need to message you, I could tell you are internalizing this as "He doesn't care about me") Im finding that pretty offensive/upsetting to have been lied to by him yet again. (If he lies, then he will do it again, so whats the point in trying to start some sort of friendship with him?)

He completely downplayed how he had broken up with me and how it had affected me when he met our friends (This tells me he minimized your feelings and how the breakup happened, probably because he lacks empathy and didn't want to lose the social status with those friends) before I got back but theyve been really supportive and kind towards me so I think they get it. He also told them that he had broken up with me because he didnt want such a serious relationship (after spending the first year saying he wanted to ‘stay together forever) (He isn't being fully honest here, I'm starting to think that he couldn't handle the closeness the relationship started to bring, he felt smothered and then started to avoid you to gain space) and that he wanted to see some much younger girl from his work. (That's just mess up...he is probably looking for something casual that doesn't bring too much closeness) Also upsetting.

Finally his mum (who I think pinned a lot of hopes on us since she really liked me and he did a lot of good stuff with his life when we were together) is still liking photos of my trip that Ive been putting online. I really like her but Im finding it really hard having her do that while my ex is being so avoidant. (It's understandable how you feel)

To be clear I dont want anything to do with him romantically and am getting to the point when I cant be bothered to be friends but I dont want to upset our friendship group anymore (I feel guilty enough about that), (You got to make a choice here...You can choose your own happiness which means having nothing to do with him (If they are your friends they would respect this decision) or you could go along with things which will make you very unhappy. In my opinion, I would have chosen my own happiness and well being than to be unhappy while pleasing others) plus I feel disrespected by him. (You have every right to feel this way, he definetly didn't behave properly with you)

Ugh, what should I do?!
