On a break looking for hope
I have posted this before but I’m asking in hope that’s I can provide more information as I’ve had time to process more and what’s happened in the last few weeks and get some different opinions.
My partner when I met him was in separation from his wife. He is from America and moved to the UK where we met. We have been living together and have also been planning on moving to the US together in the New Yesr.
Then around a month ago his wife reached out and said she wasn’t enjoying dating and she wants to see if there is anything still there between them. My partner was in shock and agreed for her to come out to the Uk (she arrives this Friday and leaves the following Sunday) He feels like he has to see if there’s anything still there, and also if we have any chance of a future he couldn’t do it with a cloud of what ifs if he had said no.
Now I do kind of understand this to some extent but it’s hard.
So, we are currently on a break, I remained in the apartment for 2.5 weeks, and since have been splitting my time between my parents and the apartment we lived in. But now I am just at my parents until she has been and gone.
We have still been hanging out regularly and having great times. Since the get go, he’s been really apologetic saying he doesn’t want to loose me, that he feels awful for putting me through this and many other similar things.
He has obviously been in contact with the wife but has been progressively having less phone calls. He has been coming off some of them really disheartened and upset by them. He’s complaining about her responses via message.
And more recently in the last 10 days has been saying how he can’t really see if working between them. He actually said he thinks it may end up with the divorce being started and has mentioned he’d pay to change her flight back if needed. He says he can’t promise but he doesn’t think it’s over between us. And they have not really been speaking a whole lot recently. Both of us have agreed it definitely does not feel like we should be breaking up etc.
he’s even said to me that if he knew what he knows now, at the time she originally reached out, he would not have made this decision. He feels like because she’s his wife still and she asked for this, he owes it to her to go through with it.
I agreed to him that I’d give him until she goes home to hold on hope for us, because there’s a little part of me that understands his reasoning no matter how hard it is. And I know that this is a big risk because there may end up being something there between them, but it just doesn’t feel like that right now.
He still talks to me about future plans a little bit, and includes me in some of them. And we’ve both said neither of us have loved someone like this before.
I’m just not sure if there’s hope for us, and not sure what to do. I’ve held on 4 weeks I can hold on another 12 days right. I guess I wonder what anyone else would do and if it sounds like there’s hope for us.

i responded before to your post and maybe you want more support too.... i wish i could say to you it will be fine they will resolve their marriage and you will live happily ever after.
there is / was a reason he wanted to sort whatever out and keeping you in reserve in case it does not happen is not fair to you .... the goal post could keep moving it does not mean breaking up but if you are still doing things together and talking texting everyday that is NOT what most people think of as a break.
@toughTiger6481
yeah I’m looking for any kind of support, it’s a really difficult situation that’s really difficult to navigate.
and I guess the reason I’m still sticking around is because I can see how hard this is for him and that this is not what was expected
you are right in the sense of it’s not a typical break, but we are not together non the less right now. She arrives tomorrow and we will have limited contact until the following Sunday.
I just wanted to know if anyone’s ever experienced or heard of this situation and the 3rd person (me) coming out on top instead of completely heartbroken.

Many many factors in resolving this
but seldom that these situations do not end with people hurt........
I am soo sorry u are in this situation I would suggest to leave as feel like there is still something there between them and that u are just a safety net I suggest u to just remove yourself form the situation as I feel its disrespectful to do that to a partner I would not tolerate it if I were u I would suggest on focusing on yourself
