Discussion - Realizing that our friends don't grow along side us

As we grow up, our friends grow too. People we've long considered to be close friends grow and change, sometimes in different directions than us. Have you ever experienced this?

Have you lost a friend? Grown in a different direction? Had to "break-up" with a friend because your values and interests no longer aligned?

This can be incredibly difficult.

Ive always had friendships that have drifted apart. I've been replaced by so called friends for other people, I guess I've never really been anybody's first choice.

I have experienced this a lot in my life I am 30 years old and I have had friends come and go. I don't see any of my high school friends or friends that I grew up with. My only friend I consider to be my friend is my boyfriend George. I thought that I have had a few online friends but they come in and out of my life. One friend I miss most above all and I think of him everyday, like what he is up to and if he is happy etc... I would love to just pick up where we left off. I might have a infection in my tooth/wisdom teeth ( whole other story) but while I am going though this I wish he was talking again with me to help me through this and to feel better. Sure I miss people/friends from my past, I have had a few friends pass away that I went to high school with and as I get older I hear of more old friends/ people that I used to know pass away, I guess that this is life. Hopefully one day in the near future I can have people in my life again I can call friends.

I know friendship sometimes doesn't work. Then why do I feel heartbroken when they leave me? They tell me I shouldn't exaggerate with my feelings but those words just make me feel less worthy.

I cut off one of my friends from middle school. I met her when I was 11, and we got along so well. When I was 15, she got extremely different and only cared about boys. I am no longer friends with her, and it hurts. Although I'm relieved to be away from all of that.

Friendship?

Isn't like recycle trash that will be used until worn out. Bah, than that's 'friendship'

Well if they want to use you, than you use them to. Corrupted world. The nice people see as bad people, while bad people just like on top of the hierarchy society.

Or.. Let just say we be with ourselves. Just need to enjoy being lone wolf again. Observe and see their true value. Using logic. Rational that needed.

@Laura

This has happened a lot to me, some friends slowly drifting away, and others seeming to abandon me suddenly. The hardest was three months ago...I'm still heartbroken and it hurts nearly every day.

Hugs for all those who have lost friends who were close to them. heart

Well, I dealt with a lot of people leaving me and all that. It really sucks. For example, in 3rd grade, I would always (LIKE ALWAYS) hang out with my bestest friend. I hated hanging out with others. The next year, she decided to stop hanging out with me, and I had no friends that year. I had no one to turn to, and it still traumatizes me. You know, the feeling of loneliness or being betrayed. I hate it so much. Even after 8 years, I'm freaked out by that year. I still can't make friends unless I trust them well, but even I make really good friend, they don't understand me, and I can't bring myself to trust in them.

@thatonesherakid saaaame. I'm so afraid of trusting people now, and I get way overanxious when people flake on me or leave me on read. Sometimes I feel clingy, but honestly I no longer know any other way to react. I'm working on it though!

I feel really sad when I think about my friendships... in every single one of them I cared more about them then they cared about me. Since I don't have many friends the few I have are so so so important to me whereas for them I'm one of many acquaintances. I used to think I finally found my perfect group of friends with a few classmates during the last year of high school but of course now they've made new friends in university and we've all drifted apart. Every one of them has got new friends and a new awesome life, I pretend I do too but in reality I was just left alone. The people I met in the university are most definitely not my friends.

@Aripuff It's like watching life pass you by😟 While you scream and shout for someone to care, but they all shoot a glance, and carry on anyway. Story of my life

Everything runs its course, including friendships. I know this but it still makes me sad.

@Malakita Bitter reality I have come to terms with recently. The bottom line is to always look out for our OWN best interests.
