My gf just started her intern year (1st year of residency). We're doing long distance too right now. It's been such a struggle - it's like being in a relationship, but not feeling like you're in one since you never hear from them because they're so busy.... Anyone around to commiserate with?

Hey there, hopefully you are doing well. I could tell that the distance and her being away its causing you some sort of struggle, specially when there has not been much contact. How often you two message each other and video chat?

Hi! Sorry for the slow reply - I was actually visiting her this weekend. We roughly exchange a handful of texts and a couple ~5 minute phone calls each day. We maybe Skype once a week when she's free. It's not the end of the world, but it's a drastic difference from when we talked every day and saw each other after work. A big part of it is that it feels like she's off in her own "medicine bubble" - new job, new world, new people, etc and it doesn't really feel like she has time for us anymore. I know she's doing her best, but it's still a bit of a struggle for me adjust to everything I guess

Hey there, I'm glad you were able to spend time with her last weekend, I'm sure you had a lot of fun spending time with her. It is understandable how you feel, before you two would spend more time together, but now everything changed so it does take time to get used to it. Are you feeling some sort of anxiety? or thoughts like she doesn't want to spend much time with you while being long distance?

@ldybruin - being a medical student can be very challenging considering the studies, curriculum and long hours you spend with your books. However, as it's a pretty lengthy course you end up spending a lot of time with your course mates during and outside of classes. It could be of of sight is out of mind and if coupled with new friendships and relationships with course mates, it may be complicated for long distance relationships. The other person may have to be more proactive and patient... else move on if it's not working out.
