I have had two 'break ups' with friends that in the past two months had to take a little bit of strengthon my part. The first simply used me for academic support even when I expresslytold her not to, and the next one was incredibly passive aggressive towards me. In short, they took me for granted as a friend; naturally, I felt very singed at this, and to some degree to myself as a person. I had to cut it off somewhere because I was getting hurt. I pointed it out assertively and politely to the first, and simply stopped talking to the second one November day after a long silence and several missed hang outs on her part.

I lost my oldest and newest friends (or, in retrospective, should I even call them that?). Am I a bad person in light of what has happened?

-Did I do my best to treat them well and respect them? Yes.
-Is it my fault that they were inherently going to take me for granted in retrospective? No.
-Are there and will there be other friends in future who appreciate me and accept me naturally? Yes.

In my experience, as one who highly treasures his relationships with other people, the key to moving forward after the loss of a friend, regardless ofwherethe fault lies (if one even exists), is to affirm the goodness of yourself as a person and finding ways to move forward. This includes finding support and spending more time with your existing friends and loved ones, and examining yourself and asking "If I have done wrong, what must be corrected in future? And if not, what ways can I perfect my relationships with others?"

No matter how largely or tinilycompatible our chemistries are to the people around us in any kind of relationship, there MUSTbe at least one person out there who will accept us and embrace who we are; someone with whom we can share that sense of camaraderie every human not only needs, but deserves. It is important for one to have faith in that.
