Ok so this is kind of a long story but Ill try to keep it short. Ok so my friend and I were fine for a couple of months of remeeting (we were friends 3 years ago and then fell apart and just refound each other in July) and from November to now we have been falling apart again. It feels like anything I say or do makes him upset/mad at me and if I try to defend myself against things that arent true then it just makes him even more mad. Theres certain things I have taken into consideration like what makes him upset and other things, but even when Im all nice and happy he says Im mad and angry. During christmas I was low on money because I just got a job after losing my last one so I was short on money and he was upset at me for not getting a gift on time and says Im lying when I said I only had 9 dollars in the bank until the 27th of December. If I try to explain my money situation hed say Im just fighting him and lying. I want to go back to being best friends again but I dont know how and I really dont want to give up on this. I know he has Bipolar disorder, BPD, and depression that is untreated and stuff, but I feel like there has to be another way I could fix things. He doesnt trust I will fix anything and I honestly just want my friend back. I just dont know what to do to be a better friend to him?

@Cookiesauce

Hey there, hopefully you are doing well. There's a few things I would like to point out;

Ok so this is kind of a long story but Ill try to keep it short. Ok so my friend and I were fine for a couple of months of remeeting (we were friends 3 years ago and then fell apart and just refound each other in July) and from November to now we have been falling apart again. It feels like anything I say or do makes him upset/mad at me (This is a sign of manipulation, it is often done to make you do what he/she wants. The way this person gets mad communicates they are often focus on their own feelings without pay attention how it is affecting the other person) and if I try to defend myself against things that arent true then it just makes him even more mad. (Yes, he is perceiving an imaginary abandonment or disconnected, so this will cause him to be mad because he is feeling like its your fault when in reality this has to do with his own past) Theres certain things I have taken into consideration like what makes him upset and other things, but even when Im all nice and happy he says Im mad and angry. (This is the strange...it is almost like if you don't behave a certain way then he feels you are mad and angry. I think that in his past people were often mad and angry, he internalized this and now feels like everyone is mad and angry at him even though you are being nice and happy) During christmas I was low on money because I just got a job after losing my last one so I was short on money and he was upset at me for not getting a gift on time (He is behaving self-absorbed and only caring about what he wants without thinking about your situation. In here he felt unimportant and triggered (this has nothing to do with you), blame you for how he felt (this has to do with his past) and then projected his feelings on you) and says Im lying (He seems to have trust issues and feels like everyone is lying) when I said I only had 9 dollars in the bank until the 27th of December. If I try to explain my money situation hed say Im just fighting him and lying. (You are doing the best you can to soothe him, but it becomes difficult when he only thinks negativetly about things) I want to go back to being best friends again but I dont know how and I really dont want to give up on this. I know he has Bipolar disorder, BPD, and depression that is untreated and stuff, (If he is not on medication then he will definetly put a lot of stress and strain on this friendship. He will put unreasonable expectations on you, and then you will feel like you just can't keep up because of his issues) but I feel like there has to be another way I could fix things. (The only way is if he seeks therapy) He doesnt trust I will fix anything (This has nothing to do with you) and I honestly just want my friend back. I just dont know what to do to be a better friend to him? (There's nothing you can do because his behavior has to do with his past experiences that are taking over the present, so he will often put you on the role of a parent to get his unmet needs met through you. I highly recommend you don't invest much on this friendship because it will drain you completly)
