I have a question and I want to hear others opinions

I'm always thinking about the sentence "if you love someone let them free and if they truly love you then they will come back" I wonder if it's true or if the sentence "if they truly loved you they wouldn't have left you in the first place" is right

So which one is right ?

I think people take that line too seriously

if you love someone but it is a situation where you may need to go your own way for a multitude of reasons ... if you are in  really in love they do return as they never find the feeling they had with you.

Perhaps that line was meant for a time when people believed in one true thing as opposed to this fits now and if not good i will leave and find the next right now....

many may not really return but instead settle for close enough partner and regret each day that they did not fight harder to get back to the one person they felt something stronger about.  they do not know how to express how they feel or perhaps even repair what they broke at one time.

I believe that the answer will be different for each person. Everyone is unique and has different morals and opinions on this. Everyone will think about these lines differently.

I think it really depends how you interpret that first sentence. If you truly love someone, you have to set them free. That doesn't necessarily mean they leave you. In my mind, it means that they are free to be themselves. In a loving and caring relationship, each partner has to respect the other for themselves, allow them their own friends and activities and needs for personal space. That's allowing each other to be free. You then come back together and appreciate each other's company.

Setting someone free means that you aren't joined at the hip and can only do something with the other person or can't do anything without the approval of the other person, that's an unhealthy dynamic called codependency.

That's my 2-cents.
