Some advice
Hey, I really need to explain everything properly because things have become very heavy for me and I don’t want you to hear bits and pieces without understanding the full situation.
I’ve been in a relationship with someone who genuinely makes me feel calm, safe, and understood. She is 4 years older than me, divorced, and has children. As a person, she has been nothing but mature, loyal, and loving toward me. She has even rejected other men because she wanted to be serious about us. What I feel with her is not drama or infatuation — it feels stable and peaceful, like real adult love.
The problem is not the relationship itself, but my family’s reaction to it.
Some time ago, my mom found out and strongly opposed the relationship. The situation became extremely emotional. I felt pressured and emotionally manipulated into ending things because my mom was crying constantly, saying I was destroying the family and that she lived only for me. I love my parents deeply, so seeing her like that broke me, and I ended the relationship even though it hurt both of us badly.
During that time, I prayed a lot and asked God that if this relationship was truly meant for me, He should bring her back into my life. Eventually, we reconnected, and things became serious again. But when my family discovered that I was still in contact with her, everything exploded again.
My parents now believe I betrayed their trust. My mom has said extremely harsh things — that I ruined their mental peace, that the family is broken forever, that I am responsible for whatever happens to them emotionally from now on, and even told me to consider my girlfriend “dead.” She has also insulted my friends for not stopping me and believes anyone supporting me is a bad influence.
What makes this harder is that I genuinely love my parents. They sacrificed a lot for me growing up, and I know my mom emotionally depended on me a lot. I was basically her emotional support for years, and now she feels abandoned. Seeing them sad makes me feel intense guilt, like I have destroyed their happiness, even though I never wanted to hurt them.
At the same time, I’ve realized something important: even if this relationship didn’t exist, I’ve started struggling with my mom’s controlling behavior and expectations. It feels like she believes I owe my entire life and future decisions to her sacrifices. I feel torn between being a good son and being an adult who builds his own life.
Right now I feel stuck between two people I care about deeply — my parents and my girlfriend — and whichever direction I move, someone gets hurt. I’m trying to handle things calmly and respectfully, but emotionally I’m exhausted, scared, and confused about what the right path is.
I’m not asking anyone to take sides. I just needed someone to understand the full picture because I’ve been carrying this mostly alone. Honestly, I just need understanding, perspective, and maybe some emotional support while I figure things out.

This is all too familiar.
My girlfriend years ago was 4 years older than i and had a child. My mom did not approve but I stood beside my girl and tried to please my mom as much as possible.
Eventually my mom came around realizing that I was not going to leave her. We Eventually got married but my mom never fully accepted her daughter as a granddaughter as she did the daughter we did have together.
The one one thing to think about is, your mom grew up in a time when dating someone older wasn't acceptable especially where a child is involved. Times have changed an hopefully one day your mom will come to see that you really do care and love this woman.
How is your experience being a step dad and ur relationship right now
@understandingRaspberries2159
It was and still is wonderful. I have watched my step daughter grow up to become a great young woman.
I do not regret sticking it out with my woman, she has become my life partner.
I'm really glad to hear that,I was also hit scared because of the kids and kept hearing lots of negativity around being a step dad which made me anxious
@understandingRaspberries2159
Ddepending on the age of the kids and how accepting they are, it can all fall into place or they can be resentful.
I think it really depends on how well you accept them and treat them as if they are your own.
Really only time will tell on how they accept you into their lives.
I'm currently 24 and the kids are 8 and 6 for now they know me and really like me even call me Papa but I am a bit scared as they grow old
@understandingRaspberries2159
It's a good thing that they are accepting you now. All you can do is continue to be a constant in their lives and I feel as long as you are gentle with them, they should continue to want you in their lives.
@understandingRaspberries2159 sounds like you are having a rough time feeling like you're caught in the middle. I can relate and totally understand the feeling emotionally drained. I think it's normal given the circumstances but try to remain positive.
I had a similar experience with my mum and partner. My mum was very old fashioned had expectations on me of what I should do, where I should live, what job I should have and who my partner should be - been to college, earning more than me, can provide a nice house and maybe a car. When my partner came along and I wasn't bothered about any of those things my mum made it really hard emotionally. I would tell her that it's not fair for her to expect me to be two people at the same time. But she was stubborn....and tbh I was too. We didn't talk for a few years. My partner encouraged me to make the effort with her but I was scared of the same conversation and ending of raised voices and no conclusion. I pushed my mum away. Eventually though I got over my ego and thought I need to see her. I'm glad I did because a week later she had a stroke and died. It is something I massively struggle with now as I have lots of regrets but I'm glad I saw her when I did.
One thing I would say is I wish I had given my mum more patience. The older generation were used to different society norms and they can struggle with changing their mindset. I do believe if I had made small consistent attempts at reaching out she probably would have come round eventually. She didn't like my partner but also knew they weren't a horrible person. I'd say have some belief in yourself and that you can be happy. I don't have any answers but I hope you know you're not alone.
