So, not sure how to decipher his conversation

So, my ex and I broke up about a month ago. We were only together for a month and a 1/2, that was also how long we knew each other. It was kind of a bad break up. I sent him a letter of stuff that I didn’t mean. But then I apologized several days later. However, he has me blocked from Facebook and on his phone. I have been on vacation for the last 2 weeks. He was worried I wasn’t coming back. He’s had women take off on him before and not come back. I was at a place we both like tonight and he came in. He actually initiated the conversation when I thought for sure he wouldn’t. We talked about some nonsense stuff. But he said some things that I am confused about. First, he made a point to use my first name. Like he wanted me to notice. He also asked me point blank, “so, friends”? I told him yes. One of the major things is that he felt we moved too fast. We did. Before he left I asked if he could please unblock me. He seemed not willing to do that. Instead he said, “we’ll talk in person.” Not sure what he meant by that. Does he mean, “I want to get to know you”? Or, “ you’re not that special, so when I run into you, we’ll talk”? He also said before he left, “this is how we should have started.” I can’t remember my response to this. I think I told him okay, or I agree or something. Does this mean he wants to start over and do it right this time? I so want to avoid bringing up anything to do with our relationship when I do see him. I think he does miss me. I think he’s been thinking about things. It seems so. But I am not sure how to interpret all this. I think that he initiated the conversation is a good thing. It’s progress from what we’ve had, which has been virtually no contact since we broke up. What could all this mean?

I think you need to think about what you want first. Do you want to give this relationship another shot? Or are you done? I'm going to guess it's the first since you are writing here. It seems like what had happened with the letter has hurt him. So while he is fine to have an amicable conversation with you, he may have his guard up. Perhaps it's best to approach him with less overthinking and with more genuine conversations? I personally think a conversation where you put down your wall first would help, e.g. "I'm sorry for what happened but I still feel strongly for you and would like you slowly get to know you and closer to you again. I want to know what you feel."

Yes, I would like another shot with him. That’s what I’ve been wanting. We broke up because stuff happened with us and in his personal life. It’s strange, though. He won’t unblock me. But we have mutual friends and connections on Instagram. He comes up on my “follow” suggestions sometimes. I am sure I have come up on his, too. He hasn’t blocked me on Instagram. We don’t follow each other, and my Instagram account is fairly new. I am sure he’s run across me more than once on it. Why hasn’t he blocked me on that? Maybe it’s his way of knowing what’s going on with me? Regardless, yes. I think the letter really hurt him. It was after that that he blocked me and hadn’t contacted me or talked to me until the other night. I have so many questions and things I want to know and I don’t want to approach him with them, but part of me desperately wants to. He is a very nice guy. Everyone likes him. I am so hurt that it came to this with him. I am not sure where to go from here. Do I give it time and see if he comes around, do I bite the bullet and attempt to talk to him about things full on? Do I move on? I mainly want to know what he’s feeling. He won’t talk about it, at least not yet. I totally respect that he may not be ready to. I think his “this is how we should have started” since I have been thinking about it more, likely means he may want to start over. I am not sure why he would have said that otherwise. Or at least he may be open to the possibility of it. I was happy that he initiated the conversation. I wasn’t going to. I was just going to say hi and go about doing my thing, even though I do want to talk and I think we need to. I am totally over thinking this entirely. I need to back down and wait it out. I know that. But I have so many things I want to know. It’s hard to really know how someone else is feeling unless they tell you. At the same time, I am a little angry about his behavior. This whole blocking me thing and not talking to me. The letter caused it. But I already apologized to him. He may still be hurt from it. I get that. But I have no intentions of calling him up or texting him, but want to leave the lines of communication open. He may come around and text or call me at some point.

Does that mean you've hurt him and he reacted by distancing himself. And now you are angry at this behavior of his so you will sit back and wait for him to crawl back? I know you must be affected emotionally from the situation right now but how about taking the first step to communicate openly? Don't see any harm in doing that and it seems like you have a lot of questions. Hope everything goes well!
