Friendship Struggles

Hi friends, just here looking for new perspectives on some friendship struggles in having, so I’d love to hear any opinions…

(This is long so I apologize in advance and truly appreciate it if you make it all the way through!)

I have a best friend who struggles with anxiety and OCD. Both his anxiety and OCD have attached themselves on to our friendship and revolve around it now, this he told me himself.

A few things this translates as: he has severe separation anxiety with me, he gets jealous very easily, he thinks every small problem is a sign our friendship is doomed, he thinks I am ready to leave and replace him at any point in time, he projects his own negative self view onto me and makes it out to be as if I also feel negatively about him.

Lately my main struggle has been with the fact he decides what he thinks is best for me and assumes how I feel and tries to act on those assumptions and conclusions without even asking what I actually feel. This kind of thing has been happening throughout our whole friendship for well over a year now, but has gotten worse recently.

For example: he likes to send me a lot of text messages, something that has never been a problem to me because I really enjoy texting people who truly talk to me and not just send trivial messages, I’ve expressed to him on multiple occasions for over a year now (and almost every day for a month now) that it makes me happy that he sends as many texts as he does.

But even when I express my feelings blatantly he decides on his own that it is annoying to me and he says things like “I know it’s a problem how much I text so I will try to stop and limit myself so that you can be happy”. And even when I reassure him it’s okay and I am happy, I can never seem to break through.

This back and forth has become a common theme within many aspects of our friendship.

I have expressed that I don’t feel good when my feelings are assumed and when he makes conclusions, especially after I have blatantly told him my actual feelings and he still goes off of his assumptions. I expressed it makes me feel invalidated, as if my feelings don’t matter because they will be decided by him anyways, and as if I have to fight to have my feelings to be heard.

He hates that he assumes my feelings and says he is trying to stop doing it because he knows I don’t like it, but he says it’s part of his mental illnesses and he knows that isn’t an excuse and he wants to fix it. So I wait because I know he has good intentions and doesn’t want to do things that hurt me.

But it does get hard when it keeps happening again and again, and I can’t tell if that makes me an asshole that I’m struggling with it, because I know he is truly struggling as well.

Theres so many more aspects of things that are jumbled up in my brain, but I’ll leave this one here for now.

I really appreciate any new perspectives that anyone has to give, I haven’t been able to talk to anyone about this to see other sides, so all I’ve seen is my perspective and I think it might be a little skewed at this point.

Luna please remember that your emotions are totally valid even if you think aren't able to "see all sides". I read through the whole thing and am posting in your thread...I hope this helps.
I see your side- you care about him a lot as a friend. You see him struggling and going through all those bad thoughts and anxiety. But simultaneously, you are a tired and exhausted handling things and managing your emotions. Because the things he said and the examples you mentioned- sounds like it is really hurting your friendship since you can't communicate that well.
I hear you when you feel like he isn't paying attention to how you feel. I hear you when he says it hurts and you don't like it.
I know you want things to get better, and maybe he does to. It is really exhausting for you both to deal with all this. He sounds like he is trying to fix it but finding it difficult.
You are bothered by his behavior, and you are upset that even when he is struggling, you aren't that calm. You want to be patient and wait until things are ok...I can hear you there.
I know it is a tough wait, but I really hope things get better for the two of you and your friendship.
I get it- it is so hard for you to keep it together and I am glad you vented here. I hoped this helped.

It feels very nice to be heard, I really appreciate your reply.

I’d like to have an opinion on another aspect if that’s alright.

It is a tough wait and it has been long… would it be wrong of me if I felt like I couldn’t wait anymore? Like if I feel like I am sacrificing parts of myself to wait for something I’m not positive will ever come, is it okay for me to stop waiting? I want to believe so much that things will change and I want to be able to be there for him, but I can’t tell is what I’m losing in the process is worth the wait, and I can’t tell if it would make me a bad friend and would be seen as me “giving up” if I stopped waiting.

I hear you and I know it has been a tough wait, and a long time. It is hard to be there for so long, especially if you've lost hope and I understand you want to leave this situation. You don't feel like yourself anymore, and it is a totally valid emotion.
Coming to your question- you are worried if you would be a bad friend or someone who 'gave up' on him if you leave. It is a tough feeling and a tough dilemma.
Here's the deal- I would love to answer that question. I would love to tell you if your 'giving up' is ethically right or wrong. I would honestly love to come and solve the dilemma for you. But I want you to ask yourself- do you want a stranger on the internet who barely knows anything make the decision for you?
Or would it be a better idea to rethink on your ideals, your beliefs and what you think would be right or wrong in the situation? You are the best judge of your situation.
Are you sure you want to let what other people think come in the way of the decision? Your experience is yours, others can only see a fraction of it. Since you are the one making a well-informed decision, don't let anyone else dictate it to you.
I know it is a tough call, but I know you got this. Either way, we are all here for you. And you are really brave if you survived on that. Walking away needs strength, sticking around needs strength too. Don't let anyone shame you from doing either, or shame you into doing either.
