Mother issues
I have been very close with my mother for a very long time. I am a young adult now and I’m realizing that the relationship I have with her is no longer healthy. My sisters that I have share the same issues with my mother. I have a new daughter and the more time I spend with my mom the more I realized that the relationship I have with her is not good. I have witnessed my emotions being turned against me in conversations with her, gaslighting situations and making me question my own sanity in the moment. Something’s got to give. I need healthy boundaries for my new family that I have including my fiancé, daughter and myself. I’m asking for advice on how to fill the void of a mothers love that I did not receive and will not receive in the future. It has affected me mentally and has even played mind games. Such as she is my own mother I want a relationship with her but at what cost to my mental health and sanity. How do you keep healthy boundaries in place even if it’s hard? Any advice would be helpful!
@toughWillow140 It sounds like you have decided that your relationship with your mother needs to change because of the toll it is taking on your mental health. That is the first step towards change. The next would be commitment. A boundary that is not enforced is no boundary at all. What consequences are you willing to enforce when your mother does not accept your boundaries? This resource may be helpful to you: https://www.7cups.com/boundaries/ along with the book it is based on: Boundaries: When to Say Yes, How to Say No to Take Control of Your Life by Henry Cloud and John Townsend Feel free to message me if you would like to talk more about this. I hope you succeed in establishing a healthy relationship with your mother.
