Too dependent and its causing problems

My boyfriend left for a school trip to a different country for a month about a week ago and I'm having a really hard time with it because he left me while I was feeling insecure about the relationship. About 3 months before the trip he began to really distance himself from me and told me he only saw our relationship as a highschool thing. We have been together for almost 2 years so I was hurt by this. He doesn't make efforts to talk to me or hang out with me anymore. One day he had asked me to hang out with him on Wednesday and when it came around time to hang out he told me he was too tired to see me and that he just wanted to play video games and didn't want to have an argument about it with me. He told me he wants me to be more independent like I was at the beginning of our relationship because I have become very dependent on him. With him being gone I feel like I can't function. I feel like hes priming me for breaking up and is losing interest in me fast because I'm not who I used to be. I'm not confident and independent like I was at the beginning of our relationship and now he is pushing me away. What do I do??

Hey there, hopefully you are doing well. There's a few things I would like to point out;

My boyfriend left for a school trip to a different country for a month about a week ago and I'm having a really hard time with it because he left me while I was feeling insecure about the relationship. (I can see why you would feel this way, its not easy being away from the one you love, and then combining that with how the relationship makes you feel can definetly make it tougher.) About 3 months before the trip he began to really distance himself from me and told me he only saw our relationship as a highschool thing. (This wasn't a good thing to say to you, it feels like this disconnection inside and then it makes you feel other things. He didn't take your feelings into consideration, and minimize the relationship) We have been together for almost 2 years so I was hurt by this. (It's perfectly normal you feel hurt by this, it wasn't okay what he told you) He doesn't make efforts to talk to me or hang out with me anymore. (This is quite hurtful, and its a sign he is starting to check out of the relationship. It's important to be with someone who is excited about texting and hanging out with you, not with someone who has gotten complacent) One day he had asked me to hang out with him on Wednesday and when it came around time to hang out he told me he was too tired to see me (excuses...) and that he just wanted to play video games and didn't want to have an argument about it with me. (Let me get this straight...so he is "too tired" to spend time with you, but not "too tired" to play his video games? This is a sign of someone who isn't making you a priority and would rather do other things. He wants to do things his own way even if hurts you, and he doesn't want communication either.) He told me he wants me to be more independent like I was at the beginning of our relationship because I have become very dependent on him. (I disagree with what he said. I don't think you are being too dependent on him at all, you are trying to connect and bond with him. His words and actions are making you feel disconnected, and he is minimizing how you feel by saying "You need to be more independent, and not very dependent on him". When someone tells you these things is where you should consider if this relationship is good for you because he doesn't attach well and expects his love partners to meet their own needs without having him to meet them) With him being gone I feel like I can't function. I feel like hes priming me for breaking up and is losing interest in me fast because I'm not who I used to be. (I could see why you would think like this because of his words, but the reality is you are doing the best you can to keep things going. He is being inconsistent and not putting any effort) I'm not confident and independent like I was at the beginning of our relationship and now he is pushing me away. (At the beginning there was zero connection and attachment, so you two didn't need to meet each other needs and wants. Once the connection and attachment started is where things started to get complicated because he doesn't do well on those, and then he backs away.) What do I do?? (Honestly, you deserve to be with somebody better than him. He is incapable to handle closeness and attachment, so he will make you less of a priority and then will behave inconsistent if you stay with him)

@freshLight64

Thank you for reaching out to me. I appreciate you telling that what I'm feeling isn't crazy and there are some red flags. However, I really really do not want to break up with him and I want to make things work with him.

@brightGlobe8047

I understand and respect your decision. I do want to warn you though, continuing this relationship will only lead to this huge disconnection, losing yourself and he will not change.
