Dear Revert!

My Allaah honour you in this world and the next.

It is OK to go through these times. An old mentor of mine taught me that trials are of two 'balaa' and 'fitnaa'. Some things expose things within us which we must improve and others purify others. But All is good. The first, where situations expose weaknesses within people like myself (i.e., of lack of patience, gratitude, etc).

But Alhamdulillaah (All praise and thanks belongs to Allaah), I wish to share something which I learned recently.

As for the issue with complaining, difficulty with gratitude:

• So Solomon smiled in amusement at her words, and prayed, “My Lord! Inspire me to ˹always˺ be thankful for Your favours which You have blessed me and my parents with, and to do good deeds that please you. Admit me, by Your mercy, into ˹the company of˺ Your righteous servants.”
• We have commanded people to honour their parents. Their mothers bore them in hardship and delivered them in hardship. Their ˹period of˺ bearing and weaning is thirty months. In time, when the child reaches their prime at the age of forty, they pray, “My Lord! Inspire me to ˹always˺ be thankful for Your favours which You blessed me and my parents with, and to do good deeds that please You. And instil righteousness in my offspring. I truly repent to You, and I truly submit ˹to Your Will˺.”

The above ayaats show something that Ibn Qayyim alluded to in one of His Books (Patience and Gratitude; although I may have read it in his book 'The Diseases and The Cures ) - Whilst we can try and muster up patience, gratitude, strength and courage within ourselves for the sake of Allaah - we must plead Him for it. Ibn-Qayyim actually referred to the concepts of "Patience for the sake of Allah" and "Patience by the Help of Allah help", but as the ayaats above show, we beg Allah for much more than just patience.

• Patience both for the sake of Allah and by the help of Allah. A person will have patience by the help of Allah for the sake of Allah, realising that he has no power of his own whatsoever. This is the highest degree of patience. (Patience and Gratitude Ibn Qayyim al-Jawziyyah P.65)

  • This is the truest manifestation of Laa hawla wa laa quwwatta illa billah. There is no power nor strength except in Allah. Even the Patience I muster for Him, I cannot do except by Him

• "Those who have patience for the sake of Allah and by the help of Allah are those who are strong and achieve much. Those who have patience for the sake of Allah, but not by the help of Allah, are good people, but weak and helpless. Those who have patience by the help of Allah, but not for the sake of Allah, are capable, but evil. Those who have neither patience for the sake of Allah nor by the help of Allah are doomed to failure. (Patience and Gratitude, Ibn Qayyim al-Jawziyyah P.66)

It was advised by Dr. Shadee Elmasry Al-Maliki that if one struggles to make duaa, then one could use the duaas of the Qur'aan. Something, too, I have been recently reminded of.

I thank you for sharing and granting me this opportunity to share. All tests are a means of closeness, for as long as we persevere. May Allaah grant me, firstly and foremostly, and us all the ability to call upon Him for every need hoping for His Pleasure and the greatest success. I hope I explained this well and may this benefit you and others.

I pray Allaah grants me concise speech so I may convey my words with more clarity and brevity.

I try to recite the below when I am in situations like this:

• إِنَّا لِله وإنَّا إلَيْهِ رَاجِعُونَ، اللَّهُمَّ أجُرْنِي فِي مُصِيْبَتي، وأخْلِفْ لِي خَيْراً مِنْهَا
  We belong to Allah and to Him shall we return; O Allah, reward me for my affliction and give me something better than it in exchange for it,

Alhamdulillaah Alaa Kulli Haal.
