Uncertain about my future.
My mom and me are very stressed out right now. We live in a house that we rent, and we have lived here for about 10-12 years. There is also a business on the property that opened about a year or so ago. That business was operating illegally though because they weren't licensed. So they got in trouble with the cops and the city, and the landlord that owns the property also got in trouble.
The cops and the city found out because my sister's fiance reported them. For some reason they are blaming my mom for the whole thing though, even though she had nothing to do with it. The business owners were harassing her one day when she got home from work. The landlord was threating to increase our rent. Our current rent is $550, and the landlord was going to raise it around $1000-1500. My mom already is struggling to pay the current rent. There is no way she could pay 2-3 times the current rent. So, we might have to move even though we did nothing wrong.
I think it's ridiculous that a landlord can even raise the rent that high. There should be regulations in place to prevent them from raising it that much. It's almost like the landlord is forcing my mom to pay for everything. This is an example of a landlord abusing their power and taking advantage of their tenants. I'm not even sure if everything the landlord is trying to do is even legal or not. It should be illegal for them to take advantage of people like this.
I would love to help my mom out, but I have lots of issues. I have social anxiety problems( I barely talk to anyone or even leave the house), I have depression( in the past there have been times I was considering suicide), and I also have OCD. I'm 28 years old and I have never had a job because of my issues. I could never get any help either(therapy or medication), because I have no money.
My mom also doesn't deserve any of this to happen to her. She is such a nice person to everyone she meets. She is great with kids, she sings in the choir at her church, and she makes cards for people to uplift them. It just makes me so upset that people are making things so hard for her right now especially since she didn't do anything wrong.
I am just really scared about what is going to happen now. I don't know what me and my mom are going to do. My mom and me don't deserve any of this to happen to us. We have had so many other problems in both of our lives, and this is just another bad thing to add to the list. I really wish things would change, but I don't know what to do to fix everything. We really need something good to happen for once.
@Joe47
Sounds like it might be worth researching fair housing organizations or low-income legal aid in your area. Maybe you could give your mom some numbers to call.
This sounds tough and stressful. I'm sorry.
@Joe47
I'm sorry to hear you have to go through this. My heart goes out to you. You have a lot on your plate but I also believe you will be stronger for it in the end. You seem to be taking the situation rather well despite how difficult it is. Keep on going :) and all the best to you
@Joe47
I'm really sad to hear this is happening to you and your mom. You're absolutely right that you don't deserve this!
I know it's hard to seek support for both of you when you also deal with social anxiety. I'm so glad you posted here, because sometimes it takes all the different forms of help you can get, whether online for moral support or through friends. I get that it's hard to ask for help, and I'm glad you took the time to write this out.
I have been in a similar situation in the past with unreasonable landlords (actually a few, housing crises are a constant in my life), but in a particularly bad case, I was able to find a free community legal clinic that helped me open a file. In the end I didn't have to follow through, because once the landlord found out I was serious about reporting him, he became easier to work with. Would that be something you and your mom could look into?
Hang in there!
