Struggling with belief

When it comes to my self esteem or thinking I’m ugly.

When I do get compliments or what not. It’s like my mind won’t allow me to believe them.

Is that weird to be like that? Not sure how to fight that?

@Hoop219032

Hello. As you have already noticed it is really not about how you look, but about how you feel inside. That is why we talk about self-esteem. Because anybody's "worth" cannot be measured in absolute categories.

Improving your self-esteem might appear to be long, narrow and winding road - at least at the very beginning. But it helped me a lot many years ago, and is still helping me right now. So, I believe, whether it's books about the subject or talking to a therapist, it is worth trying.

As for looks, even we, men, have some field for experimenting. For example: We can wear long or short beard, or no beard, or a moustache. Several years ago I decided to be a bald man for one summer - and it was also interesting.

But, as I said, it matters the most how you feel inside. For example, when a person with a low self-esteem loses their job, they may tend to think "I am lost. I am hopeless!". While a person with some healthy self-esteem may say: "OK. So it's time for changes now", or: "I knew I deserved trying something new, or maybe better" - with the circumstances being the same.

@Hoop219032 the mind is a complex organ. Not everything it tells you is true. ❤️

@Hoop219032 I experience this too. When I get compliments I feel guilty because I have trouble believing them. I think when we’ve been hurt a lot in the past, it’s so hard to believe someone would do that to us that we start to tell ourselves it must be true. It just doesn’t make sense for anyone to be so cruel. When someone tells us the opposite, our minds wonder why the others couldn’t be that way too, could it possibly be true? At least I think this is the way my mind works about things.

As Tiny said, it does take a lot of good to counteract the bad. It helps me sometimes to tell myself that the person offering the compliment is really trying to give me a gift. They are putting a part of themselves into their words. And so I don’t want to automatically reject them or tell myself they’re just being nice. Sometimes, as painful as it feels, I find myself defaulting to it being easier to accept the negative, because it’s what we know, and the evil we have gotten used to can be less scary than being vulnerable to the potential good we don’t know.

It is ok that it doesn’t immediately take away all the bad words from the past. It is ok to feel a little wary and take time to get to know the person to feel they are genuine. It is ok that it takes time for the good to start to outweigh the bad. The hurt took time to tear you down, and the good often takes even more time to build you back up.
