Self-Harm Recovery Daily Check-in: Thursday April 16, 2020

Hello, everyone! We've reached the middle of the month now, and I hope with everything that's happened and might continue to happen, that you're feeling alright with it all. We're all in this together and we're here for you.

Recovery can be a really daunting word. What exactly is recovery and the recovery process? There are many different definitions of recovery, and I find the one you make for yourself is the most important one. For me, recovery means healing to the best of my ability all aspects of myself- the mental and physical, the acceptance and moving on, the past hurts and the present me. For me, recovery doesn't have to mean I'm cured. It means my daily life returns as much as possible to the life I used to lead before self-harm took over. It means worrying about the same things people who don't self-harm worry about, what's considered socially acceptable/normal. But let me reiterate again that your definition of recovery won't mean the exact same as mine! We're all individuals, and we have to figure out what recovery looks like to us.

So, here are the check-in questions!

1) How are you today? What would you like to talk about today?

2) Is the word recovery daunting to you? Why or why not? What word would you choose instead?

3) What's your definition of recovery?

4) What's your recovery story? How does your journey look like right now at this moment?

5) What's your favourite word and why? Really random haha

Take care, everyone, and I hope you have a good rest of your week! xx

1) How are you today? What would you like to talk about today?

I'm pretty good! Accepting scars is a hard one but I'm all good!

2) Is the word recovery daunting to you? Why or why not? What word would you choose instead?

The word recovery is daunting because it seems so permanent. I don't know what I would choose instead!

3) What's your definition of recovery?

My definition of recovery is trying to get rid of the habits that are holding you back.

4) What's your recovery story? How does your journey look like right now at this moment?

My recovery story started when my eating disorder started, and then when ED recovery started my self-harm recovery took went on hold, but I'm trying to work on having both of those coexisting together.

5) What's your favorite word and why? Really random haha

My favorite word is omnipotent because I too would like to be all-powerful and it's just fun to pronounce!

@24Help1

Heya, Help! It is definitely hard to accept our scars, but it's a very worthwhile thing to try to do. It takes a lot of time and working through our trauma and emotions. I'm glad you're doing good though <3 I understand where you're coming from- maybe journey should be attached to it- your recovery journey. Does that help, do you think? I like your definition, the habits that are holding you back. :) It's very difficult to have to go through recovery for two things, and I do wish you all the best for it. You're important You can do it. I have SO much belief in you. Ahh, that word. Reminds me of all the times I had to sing that word in high school!!! (the song was Hallelujah Chorus) Take good care of yourself xx

1) How are you today? What would you like to talk about today? - I'm pretty good. I got to talk with my friends on a video call. I haven't been able to talk to them in a while.

2) Is the word recovery daunting to you? Why or why not? What word would you choose instead? - No, it's not. It's just a word so eh.

3) What's your definition of recovery? - a return to a normal state of health, mind, or strength. Literally the first dictionary definition.

4) What's your recovery story? How does your journey look like right now at this moment? - I just wanted to stop, and I have stopped since March 26th because of something that happened with my friend and I. She was the person that would talk to me whenever I felt like hurting myself, and not she won't talk to me so I've made an effort to not harm myself anymore.

5) What's your favorite word and why? Really random haha - Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious because it's long and it has a song.

@LogyBear

Hello, Logy! I'm so glad you're doing well and you had a good chat with your friends! I hope you can do that more often via video call or just messaging. It really helps us feel connected to others outside our homes. Haha yes, it's just a word, but words all have different connotations. I'm glad it doesn't seem daunting to you, though! LOL taking it literally, I see! I'm proud of you for taking something positive out of something negative. I hope the friendship heals, and I hope you can stay on that recovery journey. I'm so proud of how far you've gotten! Good on you. And haha I KNEW somebody would say that as their favourite word! Take care xx

@rebecca947

Heya! I hope you're doing well!

Great questions on this check-in! Ill join in for a bit of introspection :p

1) Im pretty okay today, lockdown has officialy been extended for one more month on Monday, which was hard to take in and quite depressing/upsetting (although I 100% agree on its need) but Im starting to accept it and feel less defeated.

2) I cant really word my thoughts on that one haha! But recovery makes it sounds like its a passive state to get to and when youre there its all done, no more problem ever again. When in reality recovery is much more dynamic and about always adapting and learning from the tough times (at least to me) Not to sound philosophic but Id call it life lol

3) To me recovery means being able to put things into perspective, it means learning from the bad instead of dwelling on it, it means being able to face my problems even when they scare me, it means always trying to figure out solutions, new ways to handle things instead of turning to negative and often self-destructive (in one way or another) habits. It means that Im able to handle everything Im thrown at in a healthy and efficient way and it means Im trying to work every day (or almost lol) to be my better self and all that for myself.

4) Recovery started with fighting regular self-harm and then realizing I was just moving from one way of SH to another, and another, and even another… sometimes sneaky ways of self-harming that I wouldnt notice for months. Now Ive made some changes for sure but Im still learning balance which Im finding hard to manage.

5) To bloom! Its like boom but in an extra good way so it sounds fun haha!

Take care x

@LinearWaves

Waves! *waves* hi! :D Glad to see you checking in! Thank you. Oh my goodness, I'm sorry about that. :( lockdown life really is taking a toll on all of us to some degree. How do you think you'll go, any plans on what to do for one more month? (and hopefully one more month only!). That is true, I do see your point there. It's a really good thing to point out, that recovery isn't ever final, but rather everchanging. I like how you worded it. I like what recovery means to you- to put things into perspective and do things that are good for you despite how your mind makes you feel and to cope in healthier ways. A really nice definition <3 Balance is never easy to find, I find. It's great that you've managed to gain some knowledge and introspection towards your behaviour and process of self-harm. It's really difficult to be able to be an observer of your own life and actions, so I really commend you on that ability. <3 Haha I love that xD Take good care of yourself xx

@rebecca947

I started some silly things already haha! Like mastering the headstand and handstand, plus just building strength, and I'm not quite there yet so just for that, it's not a bad thing that the lockdown is continuing! I'm also learning Spanish, and yeah just reading articles to learn more but that part is getting more and more tiring/boring as I've got no real objective, even if I'm trying to function with to-do lists to give myself a goal.

Thanks for your answer, take care x

@wolfgalaxy

Hello, Galaxy! I'm glad you were doing okay! Is it loneliness from the self-isolation, or lonely in another sense? <3 We've got support rooms on this site if you'd like human interaction! Yes, for sure that recovery isn't linear- it's good that you acknowledge it. Good on you for seeking/accepting professional help for yourself, it isn't easy to do. I'm sorry to hear that because of everything going in, you aren't getting the support you need. Can you do TeleHealth? Aww, I love those two words too :) take care xx

How do you not have to rewrite the questions down again to answer them

@TreaureSeekers3

Hey, Seeker! If you're on laptop, use your cursor to highlight the questions then copy them. (To highlight, just press down on your cursor and move it across the line then down to copy other lines- all without lifting your cursor. Then to copy, life your cursor then press CTRL+C). Then to paste, reply to the post then CTRL+V. Then answer!
If on phone, long press the first word you want to copy, then move the highlighted parts to the last word you want to copy. Then a pop up should be there saying copy.

@rebecca947

Sorry for the late reply to this. Didn't see it before.

1) How are you today? What would you like to talk about today?
i am feeling good today. Nothing specific really. yesterday I was talking to this friend of mine and she made me realise how I am scared of relationships now, you know. This whole year I haven't been really attracted to anyone and if I did i would just ghost them which is harsh and bad i know but I didn't realise it until yesterday. Now i just feel bad.

2) Is the word recovery daunting to you? Why or why not? What word would you choose instead?
No it isn't. i believe its hard though to recover.

3) What's your definition of recovery?
Coming out of whatever been effecting you, being healthy again, happy again. Being an improvised version of yourself.

4) What's your recovery story? How does your journey look like right now at this moment?
I don't think I have one yet. I am still on the path to recover but you can say I am making a big progress. I don't want to talk about my story here anyway, i am sorry. it looks good. i am making a positive progress.

5) What's your favourite word and why? Really random haha
I had to think about that one really hard lol. i think it's just. I can't help myself. whenever i am explaining something i have to use just and like. I can't go a day without them.
