Why do we build communities around self harm?
Why do we build communities around it??? All I’m understanding from this is that self harm = you’re special…
@JB1430
What about people talking about self-harm comes across as “special” to you?
I feel it’s important to understand the actual purpose behind these support communities. They exist not to glorify or encourage self-harm, but to give people who are struggling a safe, understanding place where they can feel less alone. For many, self-harm is a deeply personal way of coping with overwhelming emotions, and that can come with a lot of shame and isolation.
Spaces where they feel welcome and included, where they can talk with peers who relate and understand and can empathise better. Communities~ especially ones like those found here on 7 Cups- aim to break that isolation, offer emotional validation, and help people begin moving toward healthier ways of coping. You may also notice that the community dedicated to SH related support is called “Self-Harm Recovery” ~ it’s a space to share stories, seek connections and discuss more healthier ways to cope.
Yes, there can be some online spaces that can go the wrong way, romanticising pain, creating toxic dynamics, or turning suffering into an identity? and those can absolutely be questioned, I get it. But at its heart, a support space is about healing, not about making anyone feel “special” for hurting. If someone’s trying to reduce all of that down to attention-seeking or drama, it might say more about their intent than about the community itself, I feel.
It’s not easy for people to share about it, let alone seek support for it~ the least anyone can do, whether they are part of the “community”, whether they a 100% relate or not~ is to be kind, be mindful in respecting people and their struggles, and practice some decent sense of compassion, I believe it goes a long way~ 💛 Sending kind thoughts to everyone coming across.
Thank you. You are totally correct. It is not what makes a person special. Recovering from it means we are doing something special. I don't believe that I deserve more because I hurt myself. I hope that I can talk about it and find a healthy way of dealing with thw underlying causes that make me feel that way. Having a safe space to talk about it means the world to me. It does. Everyone who hurts in any way deserves to find a better way. Noatter how they cope. I appreciate the way that you responded to this post. Let's all help bring a little light to it.
