Problem: Welcoming New Users in Chat Rooms
Hey, I wanted to share with you a problem that we're trying to solve and a solution we'd like to try. Have a read through it and share your feedback!
Problem: New listeners and members entering group chat rooms don't always feel acknowledged or welcomed. They can find it difficult to get involved in the conversation and leave feeling unsupported.
Goals:
- Better identify new users in chat rooms quickly and easily.
- Ensure that new users feel welcomed and invited to participate in the conversation.
Solution: Make the Newbie badge appear in chat rooms, so that as a community we can quickly identify new users and make sure they get the welcome they deserve!

@Heather
This is nice!!!
I just recently joined Seven Cups about 3 weeks ago and on my first chat I wasn't really welcomed and I didn't feel supported.
So I really like This new post there's lots of new people and joining your first chat can be pretty hard exspecially of your not warmly welcomed!
hello! 😊
@Heather -Thank you! I love this idea, as a peer supporter and chatroom mentor/mod, I know first hand of this problem and more. I've been doing my best to make my listener chatrooms as welcoming and inclusive as they can be. Let's please all do our part in helping everyone feel welcome and included here. I always check to see if they are newbies if I don't recognize their names and welcome them to the community. This is a good first step towards achieving one of many goals I have had to make our rooms better and more welcoming for a long time now!💞
@Heather I think this is a great idea! Everyone should make an effort to welcome both memervs and listeners :)
Anxiety over money issues now...I barely make enough to cover my expenses now... But I know better days are coming soon. I am getting an inheritance but now I am waiting for a check for redeemed US savings bonds in the mail or direct deposit would be better.. Either or...anyways that check is the source of my stress and anxiety lately... I just need that money in the bank then all will be well again.... Its the waiting that causes my anxiety and stress
ADMIN, could u please unmute me. I was muted for talking about my faith and being Catholic.... Not fair.... i was trying to help someone who was scared of dying.... and then i was attacked by a few horrible ppl and sworn at.... then the moderator gave me a 24hr mute..... its not fair... i was NOT preaching , i just responded to someone who asked me about it... People can talk about the sickest things on here and get away with it.... things that others find offensive... HOW IS RELIGION OFFENSIVE.. i don't preach to ppl ... their choice in life ... but i copped so much negative bullying and slander and mocking and it HURT SO BAD. i was in the Anxiety room to get help... i have sever anxiety AND DEPRESSION.... and it hurt something CRUEL. my faith stands for love and being good etc.. what is wrong with that!!!!!! how can people justify their behaviour. Its my life and i can believe what i want, i dont force my faith on anyone, i express it and im proud of it. i dont put others down for being gay or bisexual etc or for their beliefs. IT was UNFAIR for me to be banned.... and this is hyporcritical.. and contradiction... EVERYONE broke the rules... IT WAS NOT SUPPORTIVE or caring or kind or anything it was supposed to be. I am SICK of getting slammed for my beliefs and made to feel victimised at even the slight mention of believing in GOD. I have evey right to express it. ITS NOT WRONG! and its my freedom of speech!!!!! i am extremely upset by this. People speak horribly to others in chats at times and bully others and swear become abusive and say deroggatory horrible things and nobody says anything or pulls them up on it. and yes others are offended but they dont get warnings. PLEASE GET PROPER MODERATORS. WHO ARENT BIASED OR INFLUENCED BY NEGATIVITY, ETC... WHO ARE FAIR AND JUST!
@sonzz I have witnessed this on many occasions and I am sorry that you were treated unfairly sadly this is why I avoid the chatrooms and I am a listener.
Hello.. I'm dealing with many things especially my self.. i want to try this.. hope this will work
@Heather
For your plan to work, the chatroom needs existing users to be present. There are times when the chatrooms are empty. So a bit 'hit and miss'. You could have a 'system greeting' when the room is empty, not great, but better then nothing.
I was part of the chat rooms for quite sometime, in my personal experiance, the idea of the newbie badge might help, but it wont be effective, in the busy rooms, its super easy to skip messages, and regs will mostly only talks with other regs, and the new comers either prove their exictance to have a place in the room, or get ignored and just leave or keep lurking, keeping an active mod in the room, is not possible as well, so personally, I think, reviving the slow/dead rooms, to welcome to the new members is the most realistice one, we did try something like that ( me and some other members) it did partially work, and some of the new members did find a place there. so if that idea is put into a better way of practice it might be the best practical solution
That's my humble opinion
@AmInACoffin I agree. Well said
@AmInACoffin I think there should be a separate chat room for the newbies. So that, there is no ignorance in the process of making newbies comfortable. I think it will definitely work because newbies just want to talk and they will talk to each other. Just wanna put it out there.
@iamjustagoodguy123
I do agree and it do seems like a good idea, however, there was a room for guests, ( people who are new to the chat room or the site in general), the idea was awesome, but the way it was put to practice was not ideal, it did need a constant mods there, which proven to be hard, but maybe opening few rooms for newbiews might do the trick, less busy room, the more chance people will get the support they need.
Handing part of leading the chats to active regs, to keep things floating, like how it goes in DS1 and DS2 ( which I beleive the best supportive rooms) maybe building a new project to nominate members to take that role would be helpful as well
@AmInACoffin I like your idea, it can be very effective if we all try and make it work! :)
@Heather I actually think this is such an amazing idea! Especially in the LSR where you need to wait for someone to speak, before you can check if they are new or not. Thank you!
