Lack of Motivation

I have trouble finding the motivation to start writing my thesis. I always find something else to work on and have problems putting myself and my thesis first.

@PsychologyMind97 I hope your thesis isn’t about motivation.

@PsychologyMind97 Motivation comes after action, not before, or so I’ve been told. Have you started any of it? An outline, an introduction, or something like that? Some possible rhetorical questions…What is your thesis? Why might it be important to others? Why is it important to you? Good luck with the motivation.

What is your thesis about? Are you able to pick a topic that you have more interest to learn more about? I also dread writing papers, even with after taking all the notes and doing all the needed research, sitting down and actually starting to write, takes me forever to type out even the first sentence. I think motivation comes when you are clear with what you want to achieve from writing and completing the thesis. What happens after you've completed the thesis, focus on a positive outcome and use that as your drive to sit down and work on it. Delaying the work with other tasks will only end up with a creeping deadline, and more stress in the end when you're cramming to finish it in time. Why put yourself through that kind of stress, when you can start working on your thesis now. You can even use this reason as your motivation. In hopes to not put yourself through the stress later on, your best choice is to not get distracted with other tasks and put all your focus on the thesis.

Sounds like you're procrastinating writing your thesis and it's very natural to do that because I can understand you might feel like it's a huge task and it might bore you or something. I'd just like to say that just tell yourself that once you start writing your thesis paper, you'll eventually be able to complete it (that is getting an important task done) otherwise it'll always be at the back of your mind and it'll make you feel uneasy and it will you overthink and might also stress you out. Just sit and at least start writing something. Trust me you'll feel good and better that you at least started today..which is better late than never. And once you finish writing your thesis, you'll be totally done with it and can you imagine you'll be so relieved! You can start working on it little by little everyday keeping in mind that one day, it'll get done and it's temporary.

@PsychologyMind97 I've been there LOL. Feeling kind of the same about my final presentation. I really have to spell out small steps for myself like "Read and highlight the intro and discussion of one article" "Write down notes in bullet points" etc. I find starting out with bullet point notes that become paragraphs later is easier than just trying to write on a blank page with not knowing where to start.

Hey, i understand how it feels to be in a situation like this, trust me i do, it is never pleasant, you know, having something bothering you at the back of your mind.

But motivation comes from within, try to keep a reward system of sorts, where you only do pleasurable stuff after you are done with a portion or maybe keep yourself from doing it untill you r done with your thesis. Plus just sitting down and starting with ur task is very helpful.

Hello, @PsychologyMind97

I understand what you are going through, we have all been students at some time and have gone through difficult times.

I understand that sometimes it is difficult but the important thing is that you do not give up.

Perhaps, and I leave it as a suggestion, you should look for resources on the internet on the subject to better deal with your situation.

If you need something related to the topic let me know.

Greetings, I wish you the best.

It's understandable, I've been in a similar spot before. It is hard to seek immediate motivation, so perhaps you might try to write out a list of reasons about why you are doing this thesis, what communities it will serve, and what purpose it will serve for yourself - then break it down into increments and pieces. If it helps, think of a metaphorical ladder, instead of one overarching situation.

Some people force motivation via gamification and others remind themselves of the trials and tribulations they took to get to that point of writing a thesis.
